Here's a holed coin that just ended on ebay.
Sold for almost full book value.

Here's a holed token for sale on ebay.
Hard to imagine but an example without hole for this token IS likely worth about 5 times as much.

What a shame. It definitely kills the value of a coin to almost nothing. Who would want to pay a premium for that kind of a coin? No serious buyer will. They would rather have a poorer looking undamaged coin than that one.

There are some coins for which holes do not significantly reduce value; these are coin types for which, for whatever reason, finding them without holes is difficult. Two that stand out for me are certain 19th century Ottoman gold coins, and ZAR (Boer Republic) gold veldponds. In both cases, the majority (or a significantly large minority) of surviving examples are found with holes. Unholed ones still command a premium, of course, just not as much of one as you might think.

Not rare, but still worth less with the hole:

Severe damage, like holes, certainly kills the value of a coin. Truly sorry to see the examples posted here so far, it makes me sad to see coins being treated like that.

those fishscales with holes are real pain for some collectors, just seeing it causes a physical reaction

I too have felt the pain of seeing a hole in an otherwise perfectly good coin, seeing this thread reminded me of one of my detecting finds from a few years back

one of my McCausland pennies (Ch#PE-2) ,,not necessarily a 'perfectly good' example but,,with an old square nail hole in it...
I have this catalogued under the heading "square and rare" and "old and holed"

Every one should remember that back when those coins were new, they were just coins. Sort of like today someone drilling a hole in a new Washington quarter or a 2015 Lincoln Cent. Someday in about 100 years someone will be saying OH! NO.
