quote: Does anybody know how far the coins will go? The mint site says Gerald Ford, but the guy from HSN (Franklin Mint) mentioned Regan last night. I didn't think they were going that far with them. And we yalls banks give you rolls mine only gives 4 a pop
I thought that every dead president will be on a coin.

The program covers presidents who have been dead for at least two years. It will run continuously through Ford. If Jimmy Carter survives past 2014, he will be skipped and Reagan will be honored.

This is from a preview? That was decided almost three months ago.
And as to whether Regean will be on a coin, that as Broxman noted will depend on whether of not Carter lives past 2014. If he doesn't then there wil be a Carter and Reagan dollar. If he DOES then there is so interptitation to be made with the law. The law says the presidents are to be honored in the order in which they served. It also says that the program ends when the last eligible president has been honored. If Carter is still alive then the last eligible with out a brek is Ford. Reagan is elegible, but to skip Carter would violate the section of honoring the presidents in the order served. So currently according to the mint the program ends at Ford. Carter has to die in time to get Reagan. (Since Carter and Bush I are almost exactly the same age it is quite likely that if one goes both will go and the program will end with Bush I. Clinton is a young enough man that he is not likely to die in time to be eligible for his coin, so no Clinton, Bush II,or later president dollars)

I feel this is incorrect... http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/31/5112.html(n)(2)(E) Limitation in series to deceased presidents.- No coin issued under this subsection may bear the image of a living former or current President, or of any deceased former President during the 2-year period following the date of the death of that President. (n)(8) Termination of program.- The issuance of coins under this subsection shall terminate when each President has been so honored, subject to paragraph (2)(E), and may not be resumed except by an Act of Congress. The law says to honour each of the Presidents, except the ones that fail to meet the requirements of Paragraph (2)(E). It says nothing of stopping at the last eligible President.

Yea, I'm pretty sure the plan is to honor Reagan whether or not Carter is dead. Can you imagine the conservative outcry if Reagan isn't put on a coin? I'm surprised it hasn't been settled already. You have two dems on coins (FDR and Kennedy) and only one GOP, Lincoln.

As I said the law is open to interpretation
(3) ISSUANCE OF COINS COMMEMORATING PRESIDENTS.— (A) ORDER OF ISSUANCE.—The coins issued under this subsection commemorating Presidents of the United States shall be issued in the order of the period of service of each President, beginning with President George Washington.
If you skip Carter you are issuing them out of order. This is apparently the way the mint has interpeted it as well because on their webste where the list the presidents and the year in which their coin comes out, they stop at Ford. Before Ford died it stopped at Nixon. Currently the mint dos not plan on skipping over a president. (Of course if we get close to 2014 and Carter is still alive we may see republican politicians start applying pressure to change that.)

I have to agree with Condor on this. The mint lawyers are sticklers for following the letter of the law (ie. 2008 sackies) They may come under pressure to change but right now they don't plan on going out of order and minting a Reagan dollar.

to stop at who? carter? he was a president? heehee, to terminate the program because some tree hugger is still alive and to not honour the greatest president of the 20th century would be a travesty. I think I will move him up in my cd pool, right next to obl. c p j sgt, mp

Not necessarily, if Carter was never issued (i.e. he outlives the run)! But you are right, the law is open to interpretation. I am sure this is going to be an partisan issue in the future! When the time comes, I am willing to wager that the law will be amended in some way to make it clear to issue a Reagan coin if Carter were to be skipped.

Mudpuppy.......... Glad to hear your opinion of Mr. Ronald Wilson Reagan....the father of the Modern Republican Conservative Party! This man was a god-like hero to me!...... remember how Al Gore tried to "mimick" him!..before one particular debate, he watched the videos of Reagans mannerism's and EVEN HAD HIS HAIR STYLED LIKE REAGANS !...too funny!.....(once he got "busted" on this obvious attempt to "capture Reagans essence" ..he quickly changed that and stopped,... realizing (probably pointed out from an aide and of course the press) that he was just appearing rediculous!) And I agree... one of the greatest in the 20th Century and a "top ten" of all time too maybe. It's too bad there's not room for him on Mount Rushmore.......an airport and a bronze medal...just is not enough for his legacy ! ....Can you imagine how a President could be "that" popular.........to win 49 out of 50 states ?.....THAT'S AN INCREDIBLE FEAT ! ........Even with the Liberal dominated media at the time in newspapers and t.v..........we're so divided as a nation now with "partisan politics" and "hate" and "mistrust".......etc. etc. etc.etc.etc..........THERE IS NO WAY "THAT" FEAT WILL "EVER" BE DONE AGAIN ! And yup ......even as popular as Barack Hussein Obama seems to be.......trust me......HE AINT GONNA WIN 49 OUT OF 50 STATES LIKE REAGAN DID! Nowadays....of course...the "anti" crowd want to re-write the memory and popularity of him and diminish it as much as possible, because after all he was one of those hated Republicans you know....... and p.s. The only state Reagan didn't win ....WAS HIS OPPONETS...(Minnesotta/Mondale)

Just like Conder pointed out, the schedule ends with Gerald Ford. It could be that the Mint is covering their backside or they have gotten counsel on situation. IMHO, even if my interpretation of the legislation is correct, I think it would be inappropriate to list Reagan now not knowing the fate of Carter. We probably won't know until it happens, but I am quite sure legislation will be passed to keep it going for all of the Presidents, long after the current run terminates. What is rather morbid is that the Dansco albums appear to run all the way through G.W. Bush!
