Another Overgraded Morgan MS-62?

IMO there's TOO much "noise" on that coin.
It's very baggy.
I think MS-61 is a better grade and I wouldn't be surprise at a -60.

But having said that it's also a better date/mm coin.
That may have "gifted" the coin with the higher grade.

And here again we need to point out that surface preservation/contact marks are only half the grade. Look at the strike and luster on the coin in question. It appears very well struck with good luster so even if the surfaces look 61 it's still a 62 overall.

I think it is properly graded, but could go as a 61. Have a look at the comparables below the item. All the 62s look pretty beat up.

Couldn't agree more about PL surfaces amplifying the bag marks.

As I stated above, mirrored prooflike surfaces show up any marks, nicks, rub, or abrasions to much greater effect than non-PL surfaces. This is why many PL and (especially) DMPL collectors will not buy PLs/DMPL's below MS64 (or really nice MS63's) unless it's a tough date/MM to find in PL/DMPL. 1881-CC is slightly tougher but by no means scarce in PL so this coin would not be of interest to most PL Morgan collectors unless they're on a very tight budget. More than likely, it will end up bought by a large dealer who will use market leverage to work it into a 63PL or even a 62DMPL slab from PCGS, whereupon it can be flipped to people who buy slabs and not coins.

Jovian, your Morgan looks about AU55 to me. Still has quite a bit of luster remaining, though, and a good strike.

Proof like coins are very hard to take pictures of.

I think you got an OK deal when you factor in buyer's premium. You notice that you get about what the coin is actually worth on these big auctions. Are you thinking of keeping it or do you want to try and flip it? Are you going to crack it out of its slab?
