It was Usenet, rec.collecting.coins, but I had quit using that a long, long time before I found CCF.

Before 2005?
Those were dark times indeed.

Compuserve had a coin board back in 1980. I was a member of that.

I forgot about the one at CompuServe. Fun fact, since I already had the account, CIS was my first dialup ISP. My first email address was 7xxxx.xxxx at compuserve.com. Oh, good times.

Did those sites have active communities on the scale of CCF for coin collecting?
Would be cool to go through the archives of early coin forums to see what the popular topics of the day were back in the 80's and 90's and how the hobby has evolved.
Thanks for the comments.

Quote: Did those sites have active communities on the scale of CCF for coin collecting Not really, at least from what I remember. I spent more time on local BBSs, so those were my yardstick for what an online community should be.

I started, as far as I can tell, on Coined For Money way back in 2009. Not really a forum, just a convenient site to ask about coins. A quote from my first post (October 5, 2009): Quote: I also have a coin that reads "One Dollar", seems to be American, has a picture of some strange woman and - strangest of all - is brown. What is it and is it real? (The date is in the 2000s.) That looks surprisingly funny now that I actually know what a Sacagawea dollar is (if anyone here still remembers that story, yes, it's the same coin I found on a couch). My first actual coin forum was CCF (lurking since 2011, registered since 2012).

I was amazed that no one mentioned the PCGS or NGC websites. They used to both have forums but not sure they still do.

Yes they still do, and they did exist pre-2005, but I don't consider them to be in the catagory with the "real old" ones and the Bulletin Board Syatems from back in the early 80's. CoinTalk is also an older modern forum. I'm one of the first members from there (member #25 I believe) and that was 2002.

I wanted to join coin forums way back when I first started coin collecting. However, computers hadn't been invented yet.

I was a member of the usenet group rec.collecting.coins or RCC. I am ashamed of my newbie-ishness so won't post my username or email address. This was in the late 90s and early 00s. I recognize several CCF members from there, most noticeably BiggFredd (RIP). The last I knew the news groups were archived and searchable online. First through altavista and then through google groups. Not only are they searchable, they are technically still active. But they have so much spam nobody uses them anymore.
