Nice one ! If it were me , I would try a soak in acetone for awhile. That might loosen the dirt a bit , and it won't take off any toning or harm the metal.

That is to say , use pure acetone, not nail polish remover. I get mine at Home Depot by the quart.

How do you get pictures so close up like that? I've tried using my scanner, but the DPI just doesn't go above 300... And I can't get any decent shots with a standard digital camera... how do you do it?

Don't clean it. The best thing you can do is leave it alone. It is a nice find. Cleaning it can easily destroy it's value.

Thanks,
Bill

I would leave it how it is. I honestly doubt the acetone would do anything to it. Nice find.

Acetone does NOT remove dirt with a soak, and it WILL change how the coin looks. Acetone is NOT the right solution for any coin, truth be known.

Ok, since I keep hearing so many different things, if one simply wants to soak a coin to loosen some accumulated dirt, what's recommended--mineral oil?

I'm going to send it to NCS to have it conserved and then to NGC for grading. I have a few other coins I was going to send there anyway, didn't think this coin would be worth the expense.

That is one for olive oil or mineral oil to soak since it is a circulated coin you can't hurt it.

Oil won't do a lot of good but cannot hurt it. DO NOT use vegetable based oils, they can rot on the coin - olive oil is included in that group. Mineral oil is much better, much safer, and much cheaper.
