Congratulations, Kena, on a job well done! I am curious about how everyone came up with their guess. Were they random or a serious attempt at calculation? I went with the serious attempt on this one. First, using the diameter of the clearest nickel, I determined the diameter and height of the jar, and doing my best to account for the perspective of the camera and irregularities of shape. I came up 1022 ml. Within error, this looks like a 1 liter volume bottle. The bottle looks like about 85% full. From these numbers, I went to the bank and got $100 in change in a mix of nickels, dimes, and quarters. visually, the jar looks extra heavy with nickles, so I used more of those in my mix. There are no cents visible, so none were added. I added a few halves as that seemed reasonable for a change jar. The water bottle I used was a little less in diameter that the contest one, so I added $5 to my estimate because the larger diameter will pack a little more efficiently. In the end, I underestimate the fraction of quarters and had way too many nickles I was close on dimes. But, not all was lost I got a 1940 nickel in one of the bank rolls. All the dime rolls were 100% BU 2016, so I kept one roll. Best of all, I had fun

Susuman, congrats on your nickel find and the roll of BU dimes. So, in the interest of coin-guessing science, I emptied my wife's jar and filled it with water. Turns out that up to the base of the screw-on cap, its total capacity is just shy of 1.5 liters. Maybe 1450 ml. Also, according to at least one website I checked out, the predicted distribution of change received (by number of coins rather than volume, and disregarding one cents and half dollars) would be about 14.8% nickels, 29.6% dimes, and 55.6% quarters; the distribution in the jar was around 20.1% nickels, 37.8% dimes, and 42.1% quarters. My wife does occasionally pay with change in some transactions before the coins make it to the jar, so that may explain the discrepancy.

I used a method almost as scientific as yours. First I made a mildly educated guess that there was between $100 and $200 in there. Then, I made my guess based off 13, my lucky number. Came up with $131.30 and was much closer than I think I've ever been on any sort of "guess the jar" contest!

I let everyone else come up with the educated guesses. These I sorted in a spreadsheet and selected the midpoint between the two having the greatest spread. This gave me more "chances" than anybody (except at the extremes) but obviously failed miserably! Haha, it was fun!!

I CRH, so I made a guess based on how full my jars are and how much is in them.
