I would ask the seller for the weight of the coin before making a purchase. I am not seeing anything obvious that makes the coin a counterfeit. I found another coin in a PCGS holder that did not have a stem connecting the bottom leaves. The Craig coin is a best VF Details Cleaned. If genuine, would have a value around $100.

There is something that does not look right about the Craig coin. The first S in STATES is totally different.

I enlarged the view in the Craiglist seller photo and the S appears to be fine, without physical inspection, photos is not good enough for Trade dollars.

Another area on the Craig coin that would give me concern would be the eagle's tail feathers. When viewing the Craig coin the right side tail feather does not tuck into the feathers above as the right tail feather goes to the outside. It could be a scratch or a counterfeit error.

Cleaned but looks fine to me. If you meet him, take a magnet and your scale.

I seems clear from the obverse pic that it's been cleaned. I just don't see the upside here, especially buying it raw.

The date position looks off on the Craigslist coin. Is this normal?

Prime example as to why I would not buy a raw Trade dollar unless it was from one of my 3 trusted dealers.

The date position and mint mark size and position varies on the Trade dollar. The date position on the Craig coin is typical for the date.

To my knowledge there is no comprehensive study on Trade dollars to document all the possible combinations of date positions and mint size and positions.

I think coinfrog asks the right question. Even if it is real, why would you want it given its extensive condition problems?

@Slider Thank you for the info. I don't collect these and this is the 1st time I have noticed such a difference in the date positioning. Learned something new today

I've seen enough fakes that I can usually spot them nowadays with a sub 1 minute inspection; I'll go back and take a deeper look.
