Perhaps to remind our friends RG, that we were "robbed".....lol Anyway, it looks like Phar Lap has been outstaged by the recent Melbourne Cup Winner....the only horse to win three successive Melbourne Cups. Would not surprise me in the least if a coin is minted to commemorate this horse's historic wins...  |

Phar Lap was rumored to be the best race hourse ever to live The movie being shown on American TV is rather a good story and well done When Phar Lap was brought over to the states to race, there were warnings that an Australoian Hourse should not beat the "syndicate" (which really doesn't exist) horses. PharLap did and under very trying circumstancs. With this win being celebrated internationally, somehow Phar Lap was mysterously poisoned... The end of Phar Lap and the beginning of many legends. What size are both of the coins? I too prefer the gold as it has more eye appeal!

Gold one is diameter 22 mm, weighs 7,216 gr. Siver one is larger; 38.61 mm in diameter and weighs 23.33 gr.

Ok, I just gotta ask. I don't want this to sounds politicial but how is the Gallipoli battle viewed in Turkey? As a great victory?
I see the link says the coin is "commemorating the 75th anniversary of Gallipoli Victory" and "Coins depict the Gallipoli Martyrs Memorial and a Turkish soldier with the Flag in one hand and the rifle in another".
How many Turks died defending their country in that battle?
Australians are well educated about Anzac casualities in that battle and how we subjected our troops to another countries command and control, and the hugh mistakes that were made. You'd think we'd learn.

Yes, the Gallipoli defense is tought to be a victory in Turkey.
British-French-Anzac forces couldn't pass to Marmara Sea.
That's what is tought as what happened in 1915. I can not be so sure since I wasn't there, I didn't have a grandfather to tell me what happened there at first hand.
All I am sure is that Turkish soldiers really respect ANZACs and no grudge or whatever is kept against.
Many stgories are told how soldiers from two sides became friends etc.
I myself would like to know how the story is told from your side.
Maybe it can be a good idea to carry on in a different thread, I just wanted to show the coins.

Toast here is my opinion.
I was born in Germany, I am a Europian at Heart and I live in Australia.
There is no Victory in War, everyone looses. To have victory is to avert war altogether.

From my reading of events, I believe there was a great deal of respect between the Turkish and Australian soldiers. |

RenaL, Thank you for the opportunity to see the other Turkish coins. Quite a few there that would really look good in my collection so it gives me something to look for down the road!
