Day 15 of the clashing brings us the 1888 O VAM-1a2. This is the most common in this variety as the designation for a VAM-1a2 is the E Clash plus the KEY WORD "Displaced field break" in the "R" of PLURIBUS.

The 3rd photo down shows where the VAM-1a2 begins. After looking over hundreds of V-1a1 and 1a2 varieties, we have come to the consensus that once the radial break "passes the center loop in the "R" and starts to run down towards the leg of the "R" displacement happens. Its at this point that the given coin is viewed as a VAM-1a2. The VAM-1a2 though its progression can be found with grease filled areas on the reveres die where much of "TRUST" is not present and the crack also becomes very wide.

All of these features can be found on this variety in its progression and "Are the same Variety!" As lower mint state examples are not overly pricy collecting a progression set in this type is rather Cool!

The VAM-1a2 is the most common and lower MS grade examples tend to be 3 to 4 times multiple off common sheet price. truly superb MS grades are uncommon. Keep in mind the die has a wide radial die break, so as a coin is being struck the die itself was expanding in width! That expansion reduces the amount of force within a strike "making a full strike Impossible"

Day 17 of the chasing beings to the 1889 O VAM-1a1 E Clashed dollar.

The VAM-1a1 has a few things going on that make finding mint state examples extremely difficult. Not only is this an E Clashed die pair, but the obverse die became cracked above Ms. Liberty's head and left a stressed area from the rim above the "O" of "OF" on the reveres. from the clashing.

Current population of mint state examples is only 3 with them all being MS-61 and a true population of AU-58 coins at 2. I have owned 2 of the 3 MS examples and the one I retained looks to be a bit nicer then the other IMHO.

This variety can still be found in VG grade from time to time but occurrences are becoming fewer.

With only 2 other E Clashed dollars to post in this tread we come to the last progression group. VAM-3a1 E Clash has a nice some what strong E Clash and to date is not known to be in mint state. This is a vary hard coin to locate in AU-58 with only 3 total examples known across the 3 major TPGC.

OK here is the 22 coin in the set, sorry for jumping over it as its an early die state of the 1889 O VAM-20a E Clash.

This variety is some what hard to find in nice AU grades but can be found in the wild from time to time. In mint state their are only 3 examples currently known in the big 3 TPG's and 2 of the 3 are later die states where just a small amount of the E's back bone is still visible.
