That's a shame. He probably thought he was doing you a favor.
Thanks for posting this. So far I've only bought coins from dealers and other collectors -- but you never know....

I am getting to the point where I will only buy coins that come in slabs with a grade. Buying raw coins I have been burned so many times. To buy raw coins you really need to look them over and know what you are looking for and at. I bought a 1890CC Morgan and somehow I did not notice rim ding. I way overpaid and this from a LCS. When I sold it back the dealer mentioned the rim ding and said it was about unsellable. How do you like that? I did not like it at all.

The coin definitely the worse for his cleaning, but it was not that original before he messed with it. The devices were too light for a coin that had not been cleaned of that vintage. I know that these two coins are in high circulated coin grades, but this is more like what an original 200 year coin should look like.   A 1798 Small Eagle dollar.   |

It is very hard to find truly original Bust dollars and the TPGs give a lot of leeway before they will call a coin cleaned. The first 2 pictures I would think would straight grade and the 2nd two would surely Details. However, it is clear there was some cleaning even in the original two pics.

He offered to take it back but I found a buyer through Rick Snow who wanted it for the $244.00 I paid for it. And this was back before the days of "Item not as described". It was buyer beware back then. Remember the ebay days of "caveat emptor"? Edited by bandsdean

You're definitely better off if you don't deviate from a strict plan to NOT buy any cleaned coins.
