Almost 13 Million minted and coin looks cleaned as there isn't any mint luster on it. Maybe just bad pics but I would not submit it as it will cost more to do that than it is worth!!

Nothing can be told from these pics. It could be mid-AU to ms67 to details

Try also to take them in natural lighting if possible. I agree with cascade, luster is going to make or break this coin cause the surfaces look like a solid 66, but if the luster is muted it could drop it down a point or two.

I will say that I may see some rub on it, like it has been cleaned a little. I will give it MS Details.

Reverse has fingerprints and streaks indicative of a hasty dip. Overall appearance of the coin is rough in areas, perhaps due to rusty dies.
Sharpness grade I would agree with a 65 but eye appeal / net grade depending on luster will find that number reduced by at least one if not two points to a 64 or 63.

Well, I'm sorry the photos don't cut it. This has become a thread I'm sorry I ever started. I can only emphasize that in hand they're full mint luster, gem brilliant uncirculated, no fingerprints, rubs, evidence of dipping, et cetera.

I'd like to see better photos. I don't see any major marks that would preclude an MS-65 or better grade, assuming surfaces are original and display the booming luster that an 1881-S MS Morgan should have.
Lucky Cuss, if you think this coin has the goods I wouldn't question the wisdom of sending it to PCGS or NGC at the Economy submission rate. If you do, please post the results. Good luck!

LuckyCuss -- you shouldn't take it the wrong way, the comments are not meant to be an attack against your photography skills, but an accurate reflection of what I see on my monitor when I look at the reverse of the coin (namely, in the spaces between the wings and wreath). My NET grade is MS64, but I have little doubt that a TPG would put this coin into a MS65 holder with a shot at 65+ if the luster is exceptionally deep. Cuss- I've produced the same kind of photos before on lustrous Morgans. The angle and type/amount of lighting can all but wipe out luster completely. This is why I don't do angled shots much anymore, unless it's a group shot or something. Believe me, when I first joined this community I got my fair share of comments regarding my "lackluster" photos. Some of the comments were, in hindsight, just constructive criticism, but they sure seemed harsh to me at the time. Looking forward to seeing the new photos!  |

And I still use my iPhone for photos of my coins-lol! I've learned not to post them in the grading sections. Keep your chin up.  |
