I agree that many sellers over change for shipping and cannot properly Pack coins. First class mail is like $2.60 for 13 oz in the US and Usps small flat rate box includes insurance and is around 5.90 for up To 70 pounds weight! The poor packing, loose coins bouncing around for 1000 miles with Overpriced shipping is par for the course on ebay... Couple that with Bad pictures and over grading... It's like a race between the dishonest and the incompetent...

I believe Different people see things from different perspectives and through their own filters and experiences. As such, it is important that everybody's opinion counts. I thought perhaps due to such open interaction and discussion as a community, we could come up with innovative new ideas or solutions to existing problems. This gives us the ability to enhance or improve on what we have and to differentiate. Only then can any Entrepanur stay ahead of the competition. My intentions were not to offend anyone!

Jdmern, I think first class went from 2.45 to around 2.60. In any event It is not expensive and shipping should not be a profit center. Also I have found many sellers on ebay over grade, over charge for Shipping and pack coins very poorly.

$1.05 is not a LOT of money, but in this case it is about 24% over their stated shipping charge and is in excess of the stated shipping charge. On principal alone, I would politely ask (not allege they are making ridiculous money and charging "whopping" amounts) for the seller to refund the overcharge. Quote: Yes to be fair I can see 20-50c over the actual cost to cover envelop. So the envelope is the only thing you can see a seller charging more for? ebay states that sellers can charge for actual shipping charges, handling (which includes the envelope, packing materials, insurance, and tracking fees). Costs for a seller's employees wages to do the packing and shipping are also legitimate additions to the handling charges. That said, this seller determined their charge for the three dimes to be $4.45 and that is all you should have to pay. If they aren't charging enough, then that is their problem.

hello nss-52, Your point is well taken perhaps I should have stated for ENVELOPS and SUCH! since the cost of an envelop usually does not exceed 0.8 to .10c, so yes I thought it was a fair assumption that it would cover the mentioned overhead in ONE SINGLE TRANSACTION for a package of less than an ounce! But I am not an expert ! One thing I know is that there are many decent and honest sellers in this market who do value their buyers business and strive on their repeat business, so I will continue to cherrypick those sellers.

Quote: At the same time, I will still stick with my assertion that $1.05 is neither a scam nor 'ridiculous money' Well, if it becomes a regular occurrence overcharging every buyer for shipping, then it is a scam, right? Do this 20,000 times, you have $20,000. Many buyers probably wouldn't even notice something like that.

Many sellers do NOT combine shipping and unless stated in the listing I assume that there is NO combined shipping and I will usually PASS on these sellers. Also if I receive a coin in a standard envelope I will not buy again from that particular seller. I have absolutely NO problem paying $5-$8 for shipping as long as I am assured that my coin/coins are packaged well and the package is trackable. It does take extra time and expense to ensure that a coin is packaged well and won't get damaged or lost in transit. Just throwing a couple of coins in a cheap and nasty envelope for shipping won't "Cut it" as far as I am concerned. There are legitimate ways that you can get the shipping reduced like asking that the coins be sent in a 2x2/saflip instead of the OGP/Mint packaging. Asking a seller to reduce the shipping by not sending the coin/coins registered without tracking is NOT a fair option because it leaves the seller vulnerable to the old "Item did not arrive" Scam. At the end of the day all you do is look at the shipping expense and factor it into what you are willing to pay to own the coin. Whinging and moaning about it after you have bought the coin/coins is pretty petty especially if all we are talking about is a lousy Buck and five cents.

Simply buy only from sellers offering free shipping and/or combined shipping; if you are using combined shipping always ensure that you request, and wait for, an invoice before sending payment. If seller refuses to honor combined shipping as stated in the listing, open disputes on each item as soon as possible and ebay will force the matter or cancel the sales. I see nothing wrong with the seller's practices (although his response is tactless, rude, and disrespectful.) If you want to see a true shipping "scam" look for the single coins priced at $0.99 BIN with $10-$15 shipping charges which they then send via something like media mail, an attempt to trick people into quickly hitting the BIN and not seeing the high shipping until after the fact. Edit: Wanted to add that business owners complaining to customers about profits, overhead, costs, etc. is in extremely poor taste. If you can't make a profit and pay your employees while covering your operating expenses and fixed costs/depreciation, you need to seriously re-analyze your business operations. No one is forcing you to sell at a loss, nor are you being required to pay someone to package a sold $0.99 beat-up circulated Indian Head cent in a brand-new premium-quality 2x2 with corrugated protector and send it First Class in a brand-new self-sealing bubble mailer, adding $15 overhead to a $0.99 sale of a $0.25 purchase.

I thought all opinions were to be respected, why cut down? I have read the entire thread and calling this a "Scam" and calling the money involved as being "Ridicules Money" is a huge exaggeration. I wasn't putting anyone down, all I did was to bring the debate into perspective. Your initial post does come across as someone complaining about the shipping costs and as this is an open forum and as I don't agree with your assessment that this is a Scam involving large sums of money I Too can post my opinion.

The least expensive USPS shipping option with tracking is called First Class mail and I think 4 oz is $2.61. Raw coins can be wrapped in paper or thin bubble and taped to a bit of card board then sandwiched between another piece of thin cardboard for shipping. It should not take a lot of time or money to safely ship coins.

Many buyers probably wouldn't even notice something like that. The way the DSR's are set for ebay sellers, someone who overcharged the listed shipping 20,000 times would not get to that point... But point well taken, when I first posted, the OP had not mentioned the details of the .75 per additional item, ect... The OP was certainly overcharged $1.05... Quote: Edit: Wanted to add that business owners complaining to customers about profits, overhead, costs, etc. is in extremely poor taste. Could not agree more, poor taste is the perfect phrase Quote: Many sellers do NOT combine shipping and unless stated in the listing I assume that there is NO combined shipping and I will usually PASS on these sellers. There is so much material and selection available, you can choose if you want to buy from sellers with free shipping, 1 day handling, ship from the U.S., ship from Australia, ship from within 100 miles of you, combine shipping, ship via Express Mail, or have a username that starts with the letter 'J'. The buyer has choice, which is much different when I was a younger and had one coin shop to go to which had a tub of world and Canadian coins. Now, young collectors can literally choose from thousands of different sellers, based on their own preferences

I'll never understand folks that complain about the cost of shipping. For $.50, I can send a birthday card 2500 miles away. And it gets to it's destination.
Heck, I've sent $50 coins into Canada using two stamps to friends without any hassle.
$3 dollars, and it's shipped to the mailbox outside my front door? And I can walk outside and get it while still wearing my slippers and pajamas? Done Deal... :)

Done Deal... :) This is how it should be, yet many sellers refuse to combine shipping and try to charge $6 or $7 instead of $3. When I have questioned about it some have said that the ebay shipping options suggested that service and charge. The kicker is the bad packing with the expensive shipping that many provide... I too really enjoy the huge selection on ebay and wish they would provide some guidance for sellers on this topic.
