I remember reading back in 2009 that the mint had some trouble getting the Lincoln cents in the proof sets to come out right. I seem to recall it was because of the 95% copper alloy they used to make these coins. I guess they forgot how to make them after 27 years...

I am not a fan of toning, but I love the look of these coins, especially the silver color. I am going to have to pull out my 2009 proof set and see what it looks like.

I definitely like the looks of those!

Have you owned these the whole time? If so, I agree with jack jeckel to keep them in the same conditions. If these were a recent purchase, I would store them in a dark, climate-controlled environment to sustain the current look.

If you're thinking of selling, I'd wait. I can only see the value going up.

TPG's do grade proof coins but, as far as I know, not proof sets altogether. Each coin would have to be separate and loose of the holder.

I have a year's worth of presidential proofs that were graded as a set and put into a super-slab (NGC), so maybe they will do groupings. I would be a shame to break up that collection. Then again, I'm a 2009 collector and Lincoln freak so I'm a little biased.

Just a little background.....I purchased the set through an online auction (not ebay) and the set came from Ohio. I have no knowledge of the background or storage of the set.

Mine toned like that also. It's a not uncommon issue with that particular set; mine were stored in a zip lock bag with a desiccant packet inside and then stored in a climate controlled environment and they still toned similarly to yours. So I would agree with oober and Perfessor that this toning is a result of something at the mint most likely.

The 2009 Proof and Mint Set Lincolns used the original 95% copper alloy, not copper-plated zinc. The lens insert is apparently the primary culprit for the toning of these cents.

I have similar coloring on a set I purchased circa 2011 from a dealer and stored in various conditions (variance of 60-90 DEG F; variable relative humidity 35-70% estimated). The coloring was on them when I bought them and so far does not appear to be changing noticeably if at all.

Just pulled mine out of the safe. Was bought last year, source and storage unknown, was individually purchased without any mint wrapping, looks absolutely...normal, no discoloration other than the normal dulling of stored plastic. Maybe I got a good insert! I would agree if the insert was inked as a cardboard would be, a chemical reaction. This seems plastic insert and laser etched? or however they imbed the color.

Having only one set, just wondering what "normal" coloring looks like. It seemed to me that an attempt toward frosting (cameo) was tried or at the end of the attempt.

"The US Mint reportedly encountered unique tarnish issues with the copper Lincoln Cents, which held back the release date until October 1, 2009. When the sets were finally issued, a small message was included within each set warning of potential tarnishing of the 2009 Lincoln Cents over time." from MintSetGuide dot com

Seeing these makes me want to get a 2009 Proof set even more now. Very nice toning on those.
