A few months? Those things didn't disappear from circulation just because the buffalos came out. They were probably in common circulation until at least the 1930's if not longer.

Looks like the obverse was intentionally defaced, or it went through some mechanical trauma.

is referring to it being on the Titanic which sunk in April 1912.

Although, it's unlikely any of the passengers were carrying 1912 U.S. coins as they were all departing from England.

I think both sides show a relatively proportional amount of wear and it's only the scratches that makes the obverse stand out in a bad way.

I suspect it was in a holder that protected the reverse but exposed the obverse to all sorts of danger.
Something like a belt buckle or a penny loafer.

Your right when I got called out on the Titanic thing I went backto review and goofed, Thought my original post was referring to the second posting. I had missed the original comment abiut the Titanic completely.
