You can find them a little cheaper on ebay but they have been picked over. There are a couple of key dates from 1932 and a couple of errors (doubled dies, etc) to look for. If you can talk him down to $3/each then it might be worth grabbing. |

Well at that price they have to be silver..and I think even thats bit high, but I'll wait for the experts.

Size of the can wont matter since you are buying per quarter. I'd ask to look at them first. Might not be anything you'd want to deal with if its complete junk. Who knows, maybe they've been in a can outside full of water for 20 years lol.

Due to the sellers indefinite offer, I would say you should not purchase anything until you actually see what hes offering.

I've been rolling this around in my head for a bit. The only reason the size of the coffee can matters would be the amount of quarters times the selling price might be more than my firstborn child. He says he hasn't looked in it so doesn't know what is there. So the question comes to my mind: if he doesn't know what is in there, how does he know what price to set? I think he probably actually has looked in order to come up with that price. Also, if he has, then he has probably removed anything that is of greater value. So I think I'll pass on this one, and one of these first days, take my chances by getting some rolls/boxes from the bank. I do appreciate you replies; you got me thinking. Thank y'all.

I'd probably pass too. Just a bit of warning to anyoneever in a similar situation...coins + old coffee cans = JUNK. I own a bunch of silver (mostly roosies and Washingtons) that were stored in an old coffee can since the 60s. The coins are absolutley disgusting. Coffee stains all over them--any collector value they might have had is gone. Worth no more than melt.

I would ask to see an overview of canned quarter they maybe only worth melting.

I wouldn't offer him asking price. Consider shipping charges etc there isn't much wiggle room for profit. nlp

All done now. I went back to the guy (no shipping as he lives in town) and asked a few questions. Turns out the entire can contains only silver quarters. I looked at them, and came home with only a few of them. The rest would, yes, bring melt value. But I'm not real interested in melt value at the moment, so I bought several silver quarters that weren't discolored, etc., and let it go at that. All done. I feel confident in what I did thanks to the input of y'all on this forum. Thanks.

Shame he wouldn't do any bargaining and come down a little off of that price.....if he would have I'd have cabbaged on to those in a jiffy !.......30 years from now at an auction they'd go for much more than that I'd bet.......heck at an estate auction they'd go for more than that right now !.....people go crazy for silver at those things !... Well, he would have come down - he did actually come down if I'd buy the whole can. But some of them were so grungy that I wasn't real thrilled with them. There were 239 quarters. I bought the ones I think were best. Silver melt value is $3.25 and I could have bought the whole mess for $700.

Well.......I suspect that you DID make a good deal there.......Had you bought the whole thing......let's see.....you'd have saved what $136.00 off the "per coin" silver melt price !.......if many were really "grundgy" like you said...just picking out the good ones was probably a good call on your part.......but "point this out to him" and maybe he'd come down "a lot more"......then I'd get em'!.......maybe... My thoughts, too, Eaglefoot. Let him sit there thinking he has a bunch of grungy picked over coins. Then when I get a mind to, go back and offer significantly less and see what he says. For now, I have to get these inventories and put away.
