I moved this to the Coin Roll Hunting forum for a different perspective from the regulars.

I've had better luck with the quarters. zit's worth it, for sure, buy you've got to be willing to wait for the reward.

Worth it? No. I've been a roll hunter since 1978. Today, if you are interested in any kind of quantity, it's cheaper to buy your coins outright.

fistfulladirt is correct, as per typical, in that CRH =/= much profit most of the time, and you would often be better off working for half salary at mcdonalds, or just, as mentioned, buying the coins. It is,however, imo, worth it for the excitement and anticipation that the hunt comes with. I derive a lot more pleasure, for example, by finding a 1963 quarter rather that buying one.

I agree with Illegaltender, the excitement and drive to find the unknown is what fuels many roll hunters.

Yes, it is the random reinforcement (gambler's "buzz") that keeps us CRHer searching for our next find.

I agree with the random reinforcement theory. It's too bad banks don't still supply coins loose in bags anymore. Compared to slicing open rolls, it was a lot easier to search through bags of coins when I was a kid. Has anyone found a source for bags of dimes, quarters, or halves?

@man2004 - sure, it's possible to buy bags of loose coin from the counting machine. I use to do it all the time, before I quit hunting a couple years ago. Possible, but not always easy.

I'm going to the wrong banks. When I ask about half dollars, the bankers give me an inquisitive look and tell me they only come in boxes of rolls. I'll try a few more banks down here (S. Florida). In Ohio, it was never a problem getting bags back in the 80s. But, that is a long time ago.

I ordered more rolls from 3 different banks over 2 weeks ago. There seams to be a delay on getting half dollars or the bankers are getting tired of supplying them!

Getting rolls is not cheap or free for the banks.

Hi, all. Over the years I was able to get State Quarters from local banks to save and see what they did. Well, IMO they did nothing. I got them as they were issued by the mint. When I moved seven years ago I packed them up and didn't see them until about a month ago when I looked through the box I put them in. The list is: 2004-P Iowa--1 roll 2004-P Wisconsin--1 2005-P California--1 2005-P Minnesota--2 2005-P Oregon--1 2007-P Utah--2 2008-P Oklahoma--3 2008-P New Mexico-5--Why, I don't know. 2008-P Arizona--2 2008-P Alaska--2 2008-P Hawaii--2 I tried to sell them at face value at the local coin clubs I attend but nobody wanted them so I'm going to use them to buy a suit of clothes for me to be buried in. LOL Anybody want any at face value, let me know. Don't think CCF would allow that to happen. Thanks and keep roll hunting!

We found a 69, a 64, and a 71 proof in a $500 box last night. 3 out of a 1000 coins isn't bad. It took about an hour and I've peaked the interest of a new 14 year old roll hunter/collector!

We went through the second $500 box tonight. Skunked! Time to dump these rolls and get a reload!
