I am going by photos on the PCGS website. Go to the PCGS pop. report and pull up the 1835 Large cents. There are some comparable pictures of the different varieties. I was looking at the 10th and the 13th star in relationship to the portrait.

Hmmm... definitely looks like a small eight. Not sure about the stars. http://www. (207) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed .com/coins/212/large-cents/coronet-liberty-head/1835-P/all-varieties/

I am pretty sure that PCGS is wrong about this one. This definitely seems to be the head of 36 and I dont believe tha there is a large and small 8 variety for that. I think that all head of 36s have the same size 8 which is roughly the same as the small 8 variety. The 2 pickup points for the head of 36 are the length that the cap protrudes past the hair and the base of the bust is narrower (pointy-er) on the 36.

I'll take a closer look at the pictures tonight. I don't have the coin in hand yet.

PCGS wasn't wrong, they didn't identify the head type. And it is a small 8 and small stars because the head of 36 doesn't come with large stars or large 8. And it is a N-16, R-2

And it is a N-16, R-2 I disagree with that justification. I have never seen a 1970 P LMC with a large/small date classification. Nor any 1865-1909 IHC with an "L". or a number of other examples. IMO When a TPG identifies a coin, it suggests other varieties exist, and that is not the case here.

Ok I'm lost. This is starting to give me a headache. I was looking for a lower grade large cent for $40-$60 for him. I purchased it from Heritage. Their descriptions was as follows: 1835 1C Small 8, Small Stars, Good 6 PCGS. PCGS Population: (1/93). NGC Census: (0/0). (Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 225S, PCGS# 1717) https://coins.ha.com/itm/large-cent...yBids-101116Did Heritage get it wrong?

"Did Heritage get it wrong" Heritage just listed the coin as PCGS graded it. Heritage did drop the ball on the population information. The PCGS website lists 168 grading occurrences for this variety. NGC indicates that they have graded 302 1835 Large cents but they do not break them down into varieties. So you have no idea how many similar 1835 Large cents have been graded. Thus the 0/0 for the NGC census

No matter what it "should" be labeled or who dropped the ball on what, it's an excellent gift that I sure would have loved from my uncle. Quote: I did not think you were that old. I didn't think you were that averse to contractions. Is your real name Brent Spiner?

Definitely a head of '36. The '8' size is only a thing for the other head type.
