I have to admit I would have likely been fooled by the slab. What gives them away as obvious fakes (aside from the barcodes already pointed out)? Do you think the coins are fake too then I assume?

If you look at the label PCGS MS 65, the grade on both coins is raised up and not on a straight line with the letters. The coins appear to be genuine, but I am not sure as there is a 1893 S XF 40 with the same barcode and a counterfeit coin.

I sent the seller a message. I've done this before just to see what type of responses I get. The ones in the know tend not to respond. Not sure if contacting the seller is frowned upon by admins.

My message: Parts are copied and pasted from the OP's post.

Quote:
That ms-65 1879-0 you just sold is in counterfeit PCGS slab. So is the 1897 ms-66+.
When I ran the barcode scan both of these coins came up with the following 16 digit number: 0072266413663977.
The last 8 digits are the PCGS cert number for a 1893 S MS64. You can eyeball the barcodes and see they are the same.

Just though I'd give you the heads so you can cancel the sale and avoid getting in a lot of trouble. We are a group of collectors who look for this kind of stuff on ebay.

Sellers response:

I know. I took everything down. I'm sick to my stomach. I bought a huge lot from a guy and Most of it was legit but 10% or so was Chinese . I've never sold anything questionable in my life. I appreciate the heads up and I'm doing everything I can to fix the situation. Put the word out because These things really look genuine (unless you are specifically looking for phonies).

I didn't respond to the first message he sent. A couple hours later he sent me this follow up question:

Quote:
Should I send them into PCGS to have concrete proof to take to this other guy or is that stupid? Would PCGS keep them?

I want to give benefit of doubt, but the seller already knew he had "10% or so was Chinese(green wink)".

I'm sure he closely examined coins that are high valued. Therefore, I think it was intentional. IMO.

The fact they both have the same barcode should be enough proof. If he sent them to PCGS he would get the coins back but they would crack them out of the holders as they are a copyright/trademark volation

It even says PCGS down in the lower right of the case. That could have fooled me even though the label is not normal, no holograms

Considering he doesn't show the back of the slab, how do you know it doesn't have a hologram?

Below is what the ebay seller Tommyrocks69 posted on the PCGS boards:

"So I am the infamous and stupid Tommyrocks69 who sold the fake PCGS slabs on ebay. I purchased 20 or so coins from a guy through Facebook and I guess because the price was so good I was blinded by greed. I am always looking at the coins themselves for fakes. I never even heard of genuine coins being in fake slabs so I wasn't looking for that when I was looking over this lot. I definitely thought something didn't seem right, but I it wasn't enough to make me stop the sale or investigate further. As someone mentioned I have a 100% seller feedback score on ebay. That's because I don't peddle fakes or garbage. Not intentionally anyway. If you ask some of my buyers they will tell you I bend over backwards to make sure they are happy and satisfied with the coin(s). Selling people fake slabs definitely goes against everything that I stand for. The only good news is that it was only 4 slabs. It is not a ring or anything where people can expect to see hundreds of these things flood the market. Not from me personally anyway and I think this was a one time thing for the person I got them from. Obviously it's still bad that it happened at all, but in this case the source (me) is terribly embarrassed and ashamed and will be making sure he looks more closely at what he puts out there under his name. I am sure that for some my apology won't be enough or they will think I'm not being truthful and I understand that. I can see by some of these posts that many of you take this hobby extremely seriously and as a personal attack when you see things like this happen. All I can tell you is that I love collecting coins and I will do everything in my power to right the wrongs of this particular situation and make sure it never happens again in the future."

This is really scary stuff. I would be afraid to buy anything from this seller. Thank you for posting this!

The fact that he made the "10% Chinese" comment and didn't show the back of the holder (while showing five pics ... two of the reverse) ... seems questionable. I suppose the back of the holder isn't all that interesting... and you can fake a hologram too.

Dang... this is not good for the hobby...

This scam does not fit the MO of the Chinese as they have put fake coins in fake holders. I feel that this scam (genuine coins in fake holders) is from the United States.

PCGS needs to provide photos of True View quality on their cert verification, so buyers can check photos and put an end to these scams. PCGS does not want to provide high end photos for cert verification because it is a revenue stream.

The sad part is that the seller will never get in any trouble as stated above.
He will just open another ebay account under a diff name as well as a PayPal acct.
& do it all again!

Also prior to spending a significant amount of cash I know myself that I only buy from reputable sellers with years of feedback & even then I'm skittish!
