Just a guess, but I think it might have been pounded into some kind of spiked bezel for a good luck charm. Usually those coins have rim damage but it is smooth. They were also mass produced. This may have been part of a home-made charm.

dbrablec, the poster is not a collector so wouldn't have knowledge about the minting process.

Many things like this were done. And still are. Another thing people do is spoon the coins

PMD= is post mint damage. It happened after it left the mint.
PSD= post strike damage. It got damaged after minting but did not leave the mint.

The big difference between PMD and PSD, it that PSD happened after the strike. That is a give. PMD leaves the question when did the damage happen before or after it left the mint? So PSD is a definite answer. PMD is still a question? It can't be proved either way. So I prefer to use PSD.

Makes me wonder, who inside the mint used a blowtorch on it?

Pending the reverse, I can visualize someone at the mint using the 2nd coin in a fuse box if needed.

Also, poker night at the mint. Who knows what went on back then? Thanks, Doug.

Adding: regardless if damage done inside the mint or outside the mint, it was altered after strike.

"Pending Reverse" I'm on the road to buy coins fellas but there is no "blow Torch" melt on edge or back of that coin! Dumb question; Aren't the planchets heated at the mint to soften metal to accept the die that presses into the metal? I honestly thought it was? I apologize if that is not correct?
