Can someone reach out to him and ask him to pull that listing? We need to start fighting back against this practice of selling fakes.
It may be too late but we should at least try.

He has a lot of nice coins, some IMO look over cleaned but the opening bids are reasonable. As far as the copies go unless the community as a whole says something about them I don't think one or two of us will be able to convince him to stop selling them.

Frank has listened well to his customers comments for decades.
That's why his coins are more likely to be correctly attributed and graded than almost any other seller.
If you don't like the fakes don't buy them.

Especially in a hobby where authenticity is driving people to TPGs because fakes are getting harder to detect. I've met people who quit the hobby after getting burned, and even now when I mention it to others the first question I'm inevitably asked is "How do you know they are real?" After reading the thread showing how silver is melted and a Republican denarius is minted using forged dies, my answer next time will be less convincing. Edited by jskirwin

But in the case of fakes that is the expensive way of learning, with little chance of recovering much of what you spent. I'm sure there are people willing to collect on those terms, and more power to them. But most of us who collect authentic coins, cannot afford to have fakes mixed in to call into question our other material and reduce the market value we need to get out of it. Of greater concern is that when a "reliable" dealer sells fakes mixed in with authentic originals, he blurs a distinction that ought not to be blurred. Not only may his grouping of fakes in with originals suggest to the neophyte that the difference is inconsequential, it may also catch an experienced collector off guard if a subtle, or not so subtle, flag is missed. If a dealer has a number of clients who seek to buy fakes, let him satisfy them by isolating the fakes in a special section of his catalog or sale. I have greater respect for the dealer who is watching out for the protection of his clients than one who prefers to offer fakes for a profit come what may. |

Questions:
How is bidding done in Frank's auctions, and how and when does it come to a halt? Noon of the last day, or what?
Presumably some time after the close he notifies you of the success of your bids?
If you particularly like an item how do you bid without becoming a sitting duck for being "run up the flag pole."

Hi @lrbguy
In Frank's auctions you email him the item number, your bid, and your address. His last auction ended at 11pm the last day of the auction.
In many cases the bid will be reduced if you are the winning bidder.

However, he is quick to reply to email inquires about the status of your bid - that is, whether you've still got the high bid. Also, he usually puts out an email to all bidders in the last couple of days of an auction, indicating lots he thinks are still going cheap. In that email he indicates what it would take in terms of a bid amount to take the lead for each of those lots. Like I said, old school - no high tech. No real-time bidding updates. Quaint. Reminds me of the old days when print catalogs were exclusively used for auctions, often consisting of photocopies stapled together, and bids were phoned in or snail-mailed. Direct communication with the dealer/auctioneer, to place bids and gauge bid status/competition, was often needed in those days. I often email Frank to know how my bids are faring. |

Well I heard back from Frank regarding my request that he either pull the fakes from his auction or deface them so that they cannot be re-sold as real, with the added provenance of coming from one of his auctions. Here is his response: Quote:

Frankly I don't like handling modern fakes, but they are kind of hard to avoid, and the fact is that many of my customers seem to like them very much .
