Save yourself the headache and pay the extra for a slabbed coin! Imagine saving a few bucks and later on you find out the raw coin you have is a good fake or has been cleaned and otherwise deemed not desirable and you have a hard time selling it later on?

In less than 60 seconds, I found NGC certified MS60 $10 Libs for under $660 shipped. With patience, you could find one for less. I would stay away from raw gold coins.

5% over melt is about the best you'll do. Usually more like $50 over melt.

If you're patient and can make it to the larger coin shows you will likely find a few dealers selling closer to spot. Most of those will likely have some cleaning. I picked up a nice 1899 in AU with a rim ding for $630 in Baltimore (at that time I think it was within 2% of spot). This one was about $25 cheaper than the other dealers I saw.

Well I survived another CL purchase. If you are careful, there's some good stuff out there. I've been doing it for about 10 years now, one can never bee too careful. I paid $600 for the coin, that was my up front offer, and he accepted.

Have to wait for the wife to go to bed to take pictures, she doesn't like me doing this.

Fair price, looks AU or low unc, one of the most common dates. Does it weigh 16.7 grams, plus or minus 0.1 grams?
I'd take to a shop and offer it for sale if you want to verify authenticity. Don't bother to slab it. it's bullion, just like sovereigns and napoleons.

Good looking coin, need to handle it with glove to avoid oil from hands and finger prints, I think if you showed it to your wife it would get you in trouble, first thing mine would ask is: oh ,what did it cost us?

Thanks, it weighs out correctly, and I already had it checked out, it's all good. Only my third gold coin in my collection. I'll try and dig out my others later to share. I've never shown them before, one of them is a rare mint.

Eagles are my favorites. Not too big, not too small, but hefty compared to a silver half. The first US gold coin spendy enough not to carry a collector premium. And most dates are scarce, though not the 1893.

I dug out my only other gold coins, forgot about a couple of modern ones that I had. That took me forever for some reason to optimize the pictures? I'm going to post the modern gold at another time, I have to go watch poker.
