Unfortunately, PCGS and CAC don't care what we the peons think.

I would consider myself a peon member at both PCGS and CAC. I questioned PCGS why I had to pay two return shipping charges for the same submission as the gold coin had to be returned shipped in its own package. PCGS did not care what I had to say about their policy. I would not waste my time calling PCGS to question their grading. On the coins that I have sent to PCGS if there is any hint of improper cleaning the coin gets the details tag. It does make me wonder how other cleaned coins in PCGS holders get straight graded.

I have found CAC to be open to questions about their grading. CAC does care about the small time collector. I have talked directly to JA twice about grading issues. If I owned the coin in question, I could call CAC and get an answer why the cleaned coin has a sticker.

Thanks Slider for the input. Can you call them and see what the deal is?

My curiosity is boiling over. I would love to get an explanation on this one.

If you owned the coin, you would never question CAC because you would be looking to get the CAC premium on it. Go over to the PCGS site and read some of the posts. These people are throughly convinced that you need to have a CAC sticker on a PCGS holder in order for a coin to be included in their collections. Any coin that doesn't have the sticker is "unworthy." A few of them tried to start the rumor that EVERY COIN in the Heritage auctions had been reviewed by CAC. All of the coins that didn't have the stiker were "rejects." That was totally untrue.

In way I could wish for that. If all the coin without stickers sold for less money, I'd be able to buy more lots for lower bids.

Bill I agree. I noticed the same thing on the dying Seated coins forum. More interesting is the HA debate as to whether or not they send every coin to CAC. There was a period of time when I suspected this. But my suspicions were put to rest after doing more homework.

You all do realize that CAC will buy any coins they endorse for wholesale bid? I found that it is true.

That is correct. This coin last sold on Heritage for $978. https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dol...Lot=1x=0&y=0

Current wholesale bid is $650.

The key question is how much is he willing pay? Usually it's going to be a lot less than the prices realized in auctions like Heritage.

You also need to realize that some coins are rejected for CAC stickers because CAC needs to control the supply of their product that is on the market. CAC also does not want to commit to supporting a larger market than their network of dealers can support financially. That's why a large number of the Pogue Auction coins didn't get CAC stickers. The grading was conservative from what I saw, but the CAC financial commitment would have large if they had approved of most of those coins.

@Bill, by the way, I never got your opinion on my latest sld pickup. What do ya think of her? The streaks on the obverse are from the holder. There are no hairlines on this one.

I would be concerned about the right obverse field. It looks like it's been wiped with at least a loss of toning in that area. I hope I'm not raining on your parade. If it really is an issue with holder, then you can ignore what I said.

Buying Seated dollars is a treacherous undertaking. So many of them have been worked upon one time or another. I have two Proof pieces in my collection, and they are okay, but not great.

It's ok. I'm used to getting the smackdown from ya. You coin snob!

Just kidding but I spoke with the auctioneer about this one and the right obverse field was his concern also. I took a gamble and bid to win. Glad I did. These were really awful pictures. Didn't do the coin justice.

If I ever take the time to set up one of those elaborate photo rigs, I'll send you a pic. The obverse really is the star of this coin. Lot's of lovely original luster.

I think the right field is indicative of thumb rubbing that happened many years ago. It couldn't have been too harsh b/c the luster remains. Really happy to have found this one.

I posted photos of the 1873 Seated dollar on the PCGS chat board. A lot of the guys over there think that the coin is okay, hairlines from cleaning and all. I didn't show them the CAC sticker until the end. Then they were SURE it is okay.

Grand-flation, and now cleaned - flation seems to be alive, well and growning.

Holy cow, Bill! I went out and found the post. https://forums.(150827) Not Allowed - Auto Removed/discussion/985433/1873-dollar-lets-play-guess-the-grade#pagetop

The one thing I've learned is that we, CCF are the MOST knowledgeable coin forum on the net-period! Most of the guys over there didn't have a clue! My eyes are WIDE open! And thank you for sharing.
