Years ago I went to the bank and asked for half dollars. The teller says "Why do you want them, are you looking for silver?" I said yes. She says "You won't find any silver, the Asst. Manager picks out all the silver." I spoke to the Asst. manager and she said she saves silver. I asked if she would sell some and she said no.

I always ask for loose Halves, and when I hear "I have a few, but you wouldn't want them" I take them off their hands anyways.

Once, they had a couple dozen that looked like they'd been in an outdoor fountain for years. About 2/3rds of them were 40% Silver.

I say, open them and CHECK THE DATES.

Thanks for the input. I opened 75 of the 150 rolls what a surprise all skunks. Every roll is tightly crimped no tampering. I was hoping the person who wrote no silver on the box might have meant no enders.Wishful thinking. One clown must have dipped a coin it stuck out like a sore thumb and writes in black marker Ha Ha. I dont take great pics but it is written in box no silver.

I'd open all of the boxes and all of the rolls. You can scan the edges for silver very quickly or you can hunt methodically. I've been in the same boat and found only a few proofs and NIFC. But, I could not resist hunting each marked/unraveled roll.

I once got a bag of half dollars from a bank that had been searched and dumped. I thought that I would look for DDOs. The only decent find in the bag was a 1936 Delaware half dollar. It was toned and had black edges. I guess someone missed it edge searching because of the black edge. Probably the nicest half I have found roll searching. Still Lookin

So would I. "Trust, but verify."

Ouch.

Well, as least now you know. Hopefully the last 75 have something. Maybe some NIFC, proofs, etc.

Opened the other 75 rolla all skunks. Big time slump. Sometimes it feels like I will never get another silver. Gotta keep on trying.

Sorry to hear of your horrible luck. Maybe try asking the Tellers for loose Halves?
Just today, I asked, and they all collectively had only two.
One was 1968 D and other was 1974. Just ask "nicely".

I sounds like you are getting your halves from a dump site. I have one bank branch like that too. I usually ask for halves and dollars and end up with skunks. But, I think it is important to keep good relationships with the tellers. So, I usually take about $100 off their hands at a time - knowing that the coins have been hunted. The tellers know the good guys and the bad guys. So, it is my philosophy that eventually the tellers will save me a few keepers because I am polite and helpful. Either way, I enjoy visiting the bank and telling a few stories.

cabowabo - which bank do you use? ...that way anyone else with the same bank, who might experience the same thing in the near future, can corroborate your story.
