You mean the coin does not face the lens at a right angle?
The images certainty look perfectly circular.
Less than 90 degrees gives a slightly ovoid appearance.

You can notice some egg shape to the coin back on page 1 in post number 5 but in general it's only slight.
In any case the magnification is so high with macro shots that coins are no longer flat. High and low points, raised features and rims are at a different focus than the low flat fields. You might say macro makes mountains out of mole hills. I can see different parts of the coin going in/out of focus while adjusting the camera on the copy stand.

I see...hence the necessity of a wider depth of field. Which explains the long exposure.  |

Nope. The camera has composite video out, which I fed into a USB video capture device for still frame capture.

Learjet, would you mind a couple questions? I just bought a Canon Powershot A590 IS. It has wheel with a bunch of settings, and enough buttons to tie up ten sets of drawers. Would you have anty idea as to what would be a "good set of settings" to use, while I "memorize the book? I will post a picture, taken at about 8" from the coin. It is one of four that I shot since receiving the camers. It has 8MP, and 4x Optical zoom. comments, and/or suggestions? Here is the picture. It is hand-held, and with flash, ( I think). If you want to try manual settings, give these a go. Set shutter speed (depends on light), set aperture to the largest number you have eg F5 or more, set white balance (depends on light) set ISO somewhere between 100-200, maybe 400 if the light is not bright, turn off flash, you may need to turn on macro (flower icon).
Stabilise the camera and coin as best you can and experiment with light at different angles. That's pretty much all I did with my old Nikon 2mp camera and managed some fairly nice shots.

Learjet, Sorry about not acknowledging your suggestions, but, in the intrim, I read the book, and located the controls, wheels,and buttons. Now aftre making a print out, I am ready to make an effort. I'll read the book one more time for effect,and to have it ion mind,so I can refer to different pages, for necessary changes, as needed. thank o=you for your efforts, and I was very lucky you have the same camera, as I have.

We have different cameras, they are just the generic manual settings for most cameras, although I did look up the A690 specs. Most cameras can be coaxed into taking reasonable coin pics. learjet, I might have mislwed you. my camera is the Canon A590 IS. I read the post, and as in 99-44/100 of my posts, there typos! I have no focal point, and any adjacant letter is apt to be hit! I tried working the camera from memory, last night, and boy was it a disaster!. Back to the book! Thanks for your help.

Actually I may have been the 590 I looked up. I don't think there is a 690? Lol.
Anyway be sure to check SuperDave's thread. It's for the A720 but there will be similar features.

learjet, I have done better than that: I Made a print-out of the whole thread! Now we will have to wait for him to get off "grayyard, and work like normal people, so he can think, again. "Been there, done that". My favorite shift is swing, but I would prefer graveyard to days, ANYTIME!! He is plannint on starting a new thread, same topic, but with more info, I thimnk.
