My laptop had a hard drive failure recently so I feel your pain. May be a bit more scarce around here until I get a replacement. Luckily I have several back-ups so I didn't loose any of my files.

"Backups...we doon need no backups!...We da federales!

Did have a stick with some, but none of the recent. It was acting more like a software problem/conflict, wouldn't fully load up. If nothing else, can pull hardrive and use it as remote on new unit.

Over my paygrade, when I graduated tech school they were still teaching vacuum tube technology!

It is SO annoying when our tools fail us.

If I look around in my basement I'm pretty sure I can find some vacuum tubes.

Ouch ... feel your pain with my seemingly endless faults on Windows based laptops.

I got tired about a year ago of paying Bill Gates and his PC cronies for stuff that does not work ... made the switch to a Mac laptop.

I'm thrilled beyond words with my MacBook Pro and OS Sierra operating system .... perfect so far.

Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

nickelsearcher, I am thinking along the Apple way. I am still running Windows XP and I am offended at the degradation due to lack of support. Especially as browsers no longer offer support, also.

I have heard bad nasties about Windows 10, so my choice is the IBM platform with Windows 7 or an Apple.

I think I'll make a poll on it.

It depends on what additional software programs you run on XP. I had same, my previous laptop was XP. Up grading to Win10 was a completely different OS and also my older Word and other software(microscope) wouldn't transfer to it, had to go only to Win7. Apple is also different OS to learn and same software troubles although many say they like it, I personally don't.

I got a new computer but stuck with Windows 7 because I found the Windows 10 screen repulsive. I seriously hated the way it looked so much that I refused to get it.

I was not alone and Windows 10 has been changed. It is less repulsive. I upgraded. I had to reload the microscope software. If you've lost your disk you can probably find it online for free.

If you go with Windows 10, do not enable Cortanna, the voice activated "tool". She never sleeps and she's always listening.

Given the price of non-Mac computers, I'd have the shop retrieve the HD data and put it on a thumb drive. Then scrap every bit of the sick computer.

Get a new one, fresh and clean, and upload the data onto the new HD. I'd be afraid of using that old HD peripherally on a new computer. It may contract something...

Apparently problem was only a hardware failure which progressively built up causing slow loading and lockups during use. Am pulling hardrive and using it as a peripheral backup device on a new computer...now I gotta go shopping again for another. Stuck on Win7, not sure of Win10 which most new models are, I too like Buddy said not crazy about it even tho is more like Win7 than Win8.

I've been running Win 10 on several machines without a hitch. It's stable and the security software is actually pretty good; add to that Malewarebytes and you should be good to go.
