Here's something we haven't seen yet in this thread. Who's going to be the first to point it out? (And no, it's not an 1877)

Yup...

Sleazy eBayer had images of a real '77. I spent a couple of hours confirming the authenticity of the coin in the auction, and then this was what I received. I was not a happy camper to say the least. Got my money back, left severe negative feedback, and he was suspended (banned?) from selling (at the very least) from ebay.

You weren't waiting for a counterstamped Trade dollar, were you? If so ....

To date, four of these R.I. LOMAS counterstamps are listed, three of which are hosted on Trade dollars. The likely issuer was a Scot, named Robert I. Lomas. He may have given these stamped coins to favored customers. The stamp, itself, may perhaps have been applied to his eating utensils and/or other possessions?

Here are my database notes on the Lomas counterstamp ....

ROBERT I. LOMAS APPEARS IN TROW'S 1872 NY CITY DIRECTORY AT 303 GRAND AVE, SELLING DRY GOODS, ALSO, HE HAD AN EATING HOUSE AT 243 CENTRE ST. HIS PARTNER IN THE DRY GOODS BUSINESS WAS A WM. ABBOTT. HE MAINTAINED HIS RESTAURANT BETWEEN 1859-86; THIS, AS PER DIRECTORY LISTINGS. LOMAS DIED ON MAY 3, 1899, AT HIS BROOKLYN HOME. HE WAS A MASON, MEMBER OF PUTNAM LODGE. UPON HIS DEMISE, THE TRENTON TIMES DESCRIBED HIM AS "A FAMOUS RESTAURANT MAN OF OLDER NY."

Trade dollars stamped by U.S. merchants are generally quite scarce, being that these dollars weren't intended to circulate, stateside.
