I went to another fairly local coin shop, and they had one or two with quality and price beyond my type of collecting. I am basically building a set of circulated coins, so the couple of slabbed proof or mint state coins were not how this set is envisioned. They wrote down the list of which coins I am still looking for, and what quality range I am looking for. I took pictures of the individual coins, and found others I would like to upgrade. I called the store back to add to my coin list. Here is the set so far: Shield Nickels

Thanks everyone. I already have won bids on 2 upgrades and 1 missing coin, but have added two varieties to my shopping list.

Quote:by Mark1959 Oh no - the dreaded 79,80,& 81 The 1879 and 1881 are on order, and I have bids out on the 1877, 1878, & 1880. If I win those, I can start thinking about getting varieties (so far, 6 on my list).

This lovely coin arrived in today's mail. (reverse scratches are on the PR65 slab ) A strange purchase, following their policy: I ordered the coin late on Tuesday, it was shipped for review on Wednesday, it arrived for review today, and a few hours later I mailed out a check for the coin. That was just strange, they shipped a coin before getting the money or the money even being sent

This is very nice to see, collectors who enjoy a design that I personally find kind of ugly.
But that disdain makes the idea of completing a folder or two even more fascinating! Go for it.

Good move, get the 79, 80, and 81 in proof, much cheaper and easier.

Out of curiosity, what are the business die characteristics for that 1881 that separate it from a circulated proof?

These arrived a few days ago, and I finally made the time to get some pictures. 1877 Shield nickel 1878 Shield nickel 1880 Shield nickel There are several varieties that may or may not find their way to my house, but I am calling this set complete. I am not referring to Half Dimes, but with this completion I have sets of all US Nickels.
