53 at best, but no hint of cleaning or dipping which is a HUGE problem for these.
There are tons of uglier ones than this. Get it out of that scuffed holder. This one is worth submission to NGC or PCGS.

That's an original 120 year old au coin. Nothing wrong with the eye appeal other than the photo and the crappy damaged slab. Photographing dark toned coins is tricky. Many times what looks like black toning ends up being cobalt blue, russet red and darker purple toning. Buying dark AU coins based off of pics is somewhat of a gamble. If you prefer cleaned coins you can always dunk it in your preferred chemical of choice. A link to coin would help. I took a gamble on this sld based off of the following pics. Once I got it, I couldn't have been happier. The pictures look like someone lit it on fire. In hand, that's not the case.

MikeF - Those above are my photos. Here are the pics I bought it based on (b=note that these pics are pre-slab):

Certainly not the world's ugliest, not even close. It looks AU to me, perhaps 50 or 53.

Very nice, original surfaces. I'd go AU-55.

That is not a bad looking Lafayette...I am actually trying to talk my slush fund into a similarly toned (darker than I am accustomed to) Seated dollar...my slush fund is winning the discussion at the moment. That is a good looking Seated dollar as well, MikeF...the only thing missing is a "S" mintmark.

I like that coin in any grade. I'm with the rest of the crowd in the AU53 range.

*******UPDATE*********I sent this to ANACS last month, and the results are in: AU-53 Altered Surfaces Ouch! My only guess is that they felt the dark toning was unnatural? I'm bummed, but financially still in ok shape. So, would this be a candidate for a crackout, dip, and resubmit?

Dang.
What would you 'dip' it into that the TPGS wouldn't notice?
Who would you send it to if you broke the slab?
Lovely coin btw, not ugly at all

I would not try to fix it, preferring to cut my losses and move on to a more acceptable example.

Quote: So, would this be a candidate for a crackout, dip, and resubmit? I wouldn't. I think an improper dipping in the coin's past is what generated the coin's problem designation. If you're happy enough with the coin as is, let it be. If you're unhappy with it, I would suggest selling it or trading it in for a coin you prefer.

I think I'd leave well enough alone.
