Has to be a strike-thru, not a die crack, that"crack" looking thingy extends OVER the rim

Perhaps I misunderstand but it stops right at the rim and doesn't go over.

I'm not really seeing sufficient detail for any firm conclusions at all.

Looks like a die crack with a die chip attached.

Please correct me if I am wrong. A die crack can extend over the rim.

That really doesn't confirm the crack went into the rim. Looks more like die crack in the field and die chip on rim. Just so happens they are located by each other.

Looks like they go right up to the rim but not over it.

Why do we assume a crack cannot reach the edge of a die? The whole point of a Retained Cud - or, indeed, any Cud at all - is that a crack has reached the rim. There is a rim gutter there on a die, so the crack has to be deeper to transect the gutter, but it's not exactly uncommon. That doesn't mean this coin demonstrates such a thing - I maintain that the images are too small for any appropriate evaluation - but it remains on the differential.

The foil could be rolled over the edge? Then peel away.

Totally agree with you coop. That could very well be the case. I'm just saying that it is possible for a crack to continue through the rim (if the crack is deep enough) since the area of the rim is recessed on the die. I may be totally wrong. You know way more than me on this stuff. Do you feel a die crack can extend over the rim ?

If it can't, there is no such thing as a Retained Cud. Or almost any other Cud, most of which start as die cracks rather than instant catastrophic failures.
