Quote: Silver plated gold colored dollar coin? Or just nickle plated? I think it is probably one of those silver plated coins they sell for big bucks. Probably has 3 cents worth of silver on it and they sell the for like $50 each or something. ("But wait, there's more! Act now and we will send you 3 more at only $39.95 each!")

Golden dollars are not plated. They are clad. The outer layer is manganese brass, the core is pure copper. That being said, nice find!

Great pick-ups @n9jig! Not as nice as solid silver, but still looks nice.

Painful reminder of just how ugly that SBA coin is.

I agree that the SBA is ugly. I like the size and feel of it, it is just too bad that the quarter is so large. That would have been an interesting thing if they resized the rest of the coinage in the late 70's to match.

I am sure that the silver plated "golden" dollar looks nicer than the original.
This might sound kind of strange but I have gotten over the years 2 gold plated "golden" dollars in rolls. One is a Washington and the other is Madison. They both look really nice and much better than an original "golden" dollar even uncirculated. The gold plating give them a prooflike appearance. I am not spending these. I guess the gold plating wouldn't last very long in circulation.

For grins, here's the plated SBA I got from my bank a couple of years back. Personally I like the SBA. Reverse is better than the obverse but the "Carter Quarter" is definitely an interesting piece no matter how you slice it.
