I actually met Ike as a boy in 1958 in Richard Nixon's office. My dad and Nixon worked together during WWII and our family was there visiting him when Ike stopped by for some forgotten reason.

I was just a kid, but I remember thinking how small he was compared to this image I already had in my mind. My dad was tall for that era (6'2", maybe taller) and he towered over both Ike and Nixon.

With security and such these days it is so difficult to imagine a President just "dropping by" -- that's an awesome story and a treasured memory, I'm sure. I think I'd be extremely lucky to even meet a President some day, much less have one drop in for a social visit.

Quote:#1 - Many of us here on CCF buy and sell on ebay. I propose that members who are willing to do so might list some items as charitable listings, with some or all of the proceeds going directly to Bobby and Susan to defray the operational, administrative, and other financial expenses associated with hosting CCF. I like the idea but, I don't think it would work for CCF. There is a process for any organization to be registered as charitable through the PayPal Giving Fund. I'm not sure CCF fits the requirements for that.

If not, the individual can do it on their honor, I guess.

Quote: With security and such these days it is so difficult to imagine a President just "dropping by" - The president came to town on Monday (he was about 5000 feet from where I work and I pass that hotel every day). They had several surrounding roads blocked off and police were everywhere (I had to take the long way home that evening). It was a big deal that involved a lot of planning, for sure. Yes, we have come a long way from the days when John Adams could just walk all alone to the bad part of town to find his son.

I didn't mean making it a "formal" charity, more like we could include some text in the listing that some or all of the proceeds go to benefit CCF. This would make searches easy along with the sub-forum for promoting listings.

jbuck - As a footnote, Nixon's working offices back then were in (distant memory) the Russell Senate Office Building, I believe.

Reaction? I personally am in favor of this. It is not like we are talking about some huge fee. That can be determined at a later time. I would say there would need to be somekind of IP checking too make sure someone didnt just keep creating a new account if we put a posting limit on how long it is free. Given all this forum offers from knowledge , to fellowship, to sales, it is certainly a value to anyone coming here. So I am in favor of this being explored further.

I too am in favor of this idea. A modest $50 (less than $1/week) annual membership that grants access to the entire site seems more than reasonable. Forget the knowledge offered on this site, it's worth a buck a week for entertainment value alone.

As stated before I absolutely cannot do that. It will not work at all. Members will just go elsewhere and this place will die. Most people that are terrified.... offended... or whatever of a few extremely non intrusive ads are not going to fork out $50 a year, they will take their adblockers and go milk some other forum.
Also as I've stated before several times, the place is not in danger of going under as we've stopped paying the mortgage.

I think that a *mandatory* paid membership would probably do more harm than good. We have a lot of YN's here who might not necessarily have the means to contribute in that way. However, I do think that giving perks such as larger upload limits to paid members would be a good incentive. Also, I have decided to self-impose a seller's fee on my future sales here. I've already hit my active sale limit but have a lot more to list; perhaps we could amend the rules for sellers who are willing to chip in - say 5% of sale price minimum? I know we don't want to become ebay 2.0 here, but I would happily sell on here to help Bobby, rather than ebay to line the pockets of those fat cats. Just a thought.

If you haven't done so this year, now is a good time to consider a donation to CCF if you can afford it. Anything helps.
