A LOT of high $ stuff is bought and sold by this eBayer. I mean HIGH DOLLAR. Seems to have a good rating and those VERY expensive tastes, previous old coin sales with good favorable responses. Will cost ya...

If he's that good, why the lousy reverse pic?

Quote: why the lousy reverse pic? That's what got me skeptical. You could tell if it was a real 1793 and not an altered date, by the beads going around the reverse, but because of the bad reverse pic you can't see them.

1793 Liberty Cap large cents did not have obverse or reverse denticles; instead, as noted by a couple others here, a beaded border was used. The denticles did not show up until 1794. This coin appears to have obverse denticles, not beading. The date style is also off, especially the overly round 9 and flat-topped 7/3. TY is lower than LIBER, an arrangement found only on the ultra-scarce S-15 and S-16 for 1793, and both of those dies have unique features which are not present on this coin, e.g. the broken L and Y on S-16. Here is my take on the reverse, oriented and with a base line from the base of the T in CENT running due east, it appears to bisect the E in AMERICA, correct for 1793. However, the bottom serifs on the visible letters appear to be flat, not peaked. I don't know what it is, exactly, but I don't think it's a 1793, and even that's mostly guesswork. Better pictures are the only real answer here.

IS a puzzlement. The pictures as mentioned are bad, the reverse pretty much worthless. I can't get the obv to match up with any of the known varieties.
There is no bisecting crack down through the E so it isn't S-14
The B is not well above the E at the base so it isn't S-15 or 16
NC-6 does not have the upright of the B "dotted" by a bead/dentical so it is out.
The obv of 12 and 13 have the E and R even at the base, on this coin the E is high.
That eliminates everything.
It isn't an altered 1794 head of 93.
It can't be an altered head of 94 because the junction of hair and forehead to too far to the right below the Y.
Can't be an altered 1795 because LIBERTY is too far away from the head.

Great detective work! Seller messaged me and said they'd post better photos. Not holding my breath. If better pics don't show up in a day or so, might post it in the Counterfeit forum.

Well they are different pictures, not much better ones. Lit better but still out of focus and now from further away. Have only done a cursory look over it but I still can't make a match. Trying to use the reverse this time but the upside down picture isn't helping.

I can't find this on ebay ever. Who is the seller? History or selling EAC?

Seller was garunmc. I purchased a nice PCGS graded coin from them a few months ago. Had some contact with them during the listing, and am tempted to ask them what happened, but it might be best to leave this one alone.

I suspect that this piece may have been a damaged copy. The damage at the top of the wreath may have been inflicted to obscure the word "COPY." The grayish hues are something else that I found to be suspect.
