Except for error coins this is the second most expensive LSQ. I think they are right behind the 1916. I know the 27-S has the lowest mintage besides the 1916, but those 27-S coins have the protected date, whereas the 23-S is scarce in MS condition because the dates wore off in a couple of years. Is this coin considered FH? I know that individual SLQ's have better or worse strikes. One coin can have a FH and another will never seem to be FH depending on the date. FH coins sell for a premium. I lack only the 1916 and don't have $9000 to get a good one.

Certainly not my series (although my favorite design), but I have to agree with Conder that something just doesn't look right, especially around the date. Also notice how the star to the left of the mm extends above the mm on the NGC example, not so on the coin in question. Something odd with the left foot too. Trying to do this from my cellphone, perhaps you guys can see more from a full size monitor. Here is an ms example from NGC for comparison.   |

Comparing the date on this example to the dates on several of my own pre-1925 SLQ's, I think the date is fine. The 9's can flatten out at the 3 o'clock position, even on AU or better examples such as it does here. The 23 is in the exact same position as on my AU 1923 and if anything were to be altered, it would be the 2 and/or the 3. The easiest alterations are of 1920-s or 1924-s coins. I think this one is genuine, but it'd sure be worth sending in to a TPG to be sure. Without actually having it in hand, no one can be 100% certain. |

I posted this coin ats and the consensus was most likely genuine/cleaned. There were some concerns raised regarding the mm and the M, but they could easily be attributed to the images as could the mushy looking details.

Nice coin. Looks UNC with a possible cleaning. Could all those hairlines be die polishing lines? Doubtful but what a hard coin to find!

The story is simple- I bought this coin from a Czech auction site (not ebay), this one is known only in the Czech republic. The man who was selling this dindn't even recognize that the coin had an S mintmark, but he has sent some photos. I noticed the mintmark, it was not a problem to win it for a very low price. And the other question- the reason why I collect US coins is that here people often do not know the true value of their coins. Some are overvalued, other are undervalued. For example early Buffalo nickles are cheap. |
