Seems very original, but with soft high points and no indication of luster, I just can't go AU.

I like the toning on the coin and its surfaces are very clean and far above average. The
strike through on this coin IMO kept this coin out of a higher grade and will also keep it
from reaching its full potential pricewise. Do you have a grade Mike ?

Seems way high given the damage. This coin has a low mintage of 15k but it doesn't appear to be that hard to find if you want one.

@numismatic student that is NOT PMD. It's a 'strikethrough error' 48 is a really tough year. Similar to 44's which don't come up for auction very often. This coin had ho hum eye appeal but it just goes to show how much pent up demand there is for original slds. I'm surprised it went for $1,800. Just imagine what an original 48 with eye appeal would sell for. That's why you can toss out your price guides for this series. |

No one said it was PMD. It is damaged nonetheless. I don't know about pent up demand. It you want to play that game please post links. Again, we are talking about 48's in au with original surfaces. Any stooge on an given week can go out and purchase cleaned junk coins in the seated series. Once again, finding them with original surfaces and eye appeal is far more challenging. I don't understand why you can't comprehend that simple concept. It's not complicated unless you are just looking for an argument.

I suppose I can't comprehend paying full freight for the eye appeal of a coin with damage. This coin sold at wholesale bid and was lucky to get that. I will gladly buy damaged coins with other elements that appeal to me way below wholesale bid.

The after markups, if you can actually find and follow the coins are far higher than the prices realized at auctions. That's the secondary market. In most instances from my experience you will have your best shot at best prices at auction. It would not surprise me to see this 48 again on some other website. Like you I was kind of surprised it hammered at $1,800. The eye appeal just wasn't there for me. Did the strike through error bother me? Yes, but not so much as the dull and boring appearance of the coin. Edited by MikeF
