You are correct Coop. They sell them to the public so they can collect them. I am very happy to share this as this thread I made keeps getting better and better. I got a message back from the seller I bought it from. Here's what he said. Quote:Good Morning, We have a coin store here in Fort Wayne. The die set you bought (as well as the other one we have for sale), came from an estate we purchased, and they have been on our back room shelf since. Decided to list them on ebay after.

Thank you jbuck! It is nice to see you here and I can imagine you are really enjoying this thread I created. I figured I would post this since it's a rarely brought up discussion on here. This post will probably be brought up again a couple years later to do a demonstration on someone's thread and that's what I want. I want people to learn a ton so that's why I posted this.

Quote: Ya wonder why they didn't machine a flat on the dies so a set screw would prevent it from rotating! Typically they did. You may not be able to see it on the 1995, and 1968 dies shown above due to how the pictures were taken, but you can see it on the 2008 cent die from the OP (Size and the thread title tells you it is a cent, the P in the serial number tells you it is from Philadelphia and the 8 tells you it is 2008. The mint didn't sell surface ground defaced until during the State Quarter run so it wouldn't be a 1998.). Fifth picture, on the base just to the right of the serial number. That is the mounting flat.

Now I know the year now too which I wanted to know.

Nice die! I bought quite a few of them when there was a lul in the market for them at around $12 to $15 each. I love the way they come with a certificate that tells you when the die was put into use when it was taken out of use, how many coins it struck and why it was taken out of production. Also love the Very Early Die State coin that comes with it. It is described as one of the first coins off the die and by looking at one you really get to see what a "first strike" looks like.

That is the mounting flat. my die is a 1993 Denver cent. Sold to me by Fred Weinberg They did the die grinding before the State Quarters. this could be a 1998 P sold in 1999. How ever it probably is a 2008 P as I do not believe the Box Set die sells did not happen until 1999 State Quarters.
