Yeah - give it a 100% acetone soak - I give all my newly aquirred Large cents at least a 1/2 hour per side with no bad results.

I'm yielding to the experts. She is in acetone as of 5 minutes ago.

I dab the coin with a cotton ball once in a while too. That helps get off some of the harder to dislodge gunk. Don't wipe it..just do a dab on each side.

A little dab will do ya.

Not to be unkind, but I don't think you can hurt that poor girl too much.

Well here is the old girl's debutant reveal:

Should-I-Try-To-Clean-This-1852-Cent?

The first photos are under the scope like the originals were. The second is with the new camera with ambient light. She does look better, but I'm afraid the damage was done. Thanks for the info everybody.

One interesting fact is that you've shown us the result of such an attempt.

In the future if I see such an odd bird, ill have a much better idea about how it achieved that look.

Now I'm wondering if I should leave it out of the flip and see if it will oxidize. It's a fairly well struck cent and I think it may look better with a brown coat. Thoughts? Will it ever tone properly?

Best leave it as is. Yes leaving it out to get more Oxygen will darken it but where the tape was at, the darkening will never be as dark as the rest of the coin. However, as long as it's your coin, why not try.

I agree, she does look better.

I think it is worth a shot, but I think it will take a while. There is the possibility that you can handle it some, get some grime on it to affect the oxidation rate, then rinse again with acetone before it does any permanent damage. I could be wrong so look to other comments before committing.

Another option is to make her a pocket piece. You will loose a grade point or two, but could end up looking better overall.

If you do make her a pocket piece, be sure to keep us updated.

Also, feel free to add her here...
