This seems ridiculous to me. Pay to have it graded and then pay again to get the grading graded.

There you go. Just print up some stickers and if you can get some people to buy into it who knows how much you could make.

Why would I want to spend any of my money on purchasing stickers to put on other peoples coins. I just want people to pay me to look at their coins. No loss of money on my part.

Agreed TSOTL. In the end it seems like overkill and only about $$$$. As a side note to this process, I have yet to find anyone willing to work with me to submit the coin, and that is after several emails/calls to folks listed on CAC's website. Has anyone here had any luck with submitting a coin and getting it stickered?

Wait until Oprah puts a sticker on a coin. Women will sell their husbands best to buy State Quarters sets with her backing. It is all sales, sales, sales. Does one trust John Albanese and other dealers more than PCGS? Actually It isn't so new, for many years PCGS and other graded coins were given PQ labels by sellers. It isn't hard to find a group of PCGS identical coins and arrange them from best to lowest for the grade. What CAC seems to be doing is to set up a system for "sight unseen" market trading. They don't intend to let the average individual trade on the market, so why grade their coins. I have seen some CAC graded coins and in fairness, overall , they are better than the average PCGS for the grade. yes, a collector could go to dealers or shows and cherrypick the best and do as well, except you still couldn't sell "sight unseen" on a liquid market as they intend. The less knowledgeable buyers will appreciate the relative liquidity and call them investments. The knowledgeable and experienced "collector" will cherrypick themselves and call them "wondercoins" ....Ok a little overboard.. Jim |

As a bratty young kid I collected comic books to the degree of stands at conventions, orginial art, and books listed in the price guide upwards of $700 in 1983 dollars each. For a kid I was kicking it up! Anyhow, as a brat I learned about the "price guide"- which said that my copy of the first Martian Manhunter was worth $550, I sold mine for $750 and told the guy who purchased it the the price guide was just that- a GUIDE. I'm new to coins but I think it's the same deal. How can you say a 1798 large cent is worth $50 or whatever, when it's something you just can't go and buy @ Target- it's Supply and Demand. ( though Target might carry 1880's CC Morgan dollars, but it will tear after one wash :+) ) I think that is the danger presented by grading services, THEY begin to decide what things are worth and the common man nine times out of ten will just follow suit. There is a place for grading services, but by NO means would something like this be an END-ALL. It is just a Means... |

The price is always going to be what you are willing to give to have it, or take to give it up. Any price guide is at best just a starting point for the negotiation!

Hey desertgem, I think you have hit the nail on the head with your take on this. Particularly your comment regarding the "sight unseen" market and how this isn't a market open to anyone except the select few. I have been feeling this way as this process has unfolded but have been hesitant to say it.I feel kind of like a dad who is told their kid cant go to a certain school even if her grades and such are up to snuff.
It is a marketing tool concocted by some in the industry, but I would like access to it if it is impacting valuations.

At the moment, you can only submit through a registered CAC dealer. Is there any reason you don't want to do that? If it is the add-on charge referenced on the CAC website, not all dealers charge that fee.

CAC = Coin @ Additional Cost to the submitter and the submitters potential buyer. What for?
Your further ahead if the coin is that great to crack it out and resubmit to the grading company for a potential higher grade.
This "CAC" to me is nothing more than a money making machine that is unbelievable to me people are literally buying into!

Well PTB I have thought of that. As it stands now, it is in a MS66 holder and none have been graded higher.... so realistically I dont see it happening. To my thinking, the TPGs have become a bit more stringent over the last yr or so and with my luck the coin will come back in a 65 holder :>)
I think it is funny how we are all in agreement about the distaste for the sticker, but nobody has yet to disagree with my assertion that they are impacting the market and the valuations of the coins that carry them.
Just to let folks know, I have finally found a dealer who is willing to talk about submitting the coin for me. If people care I will post periodically to let folks know how things go.

Hunavtercav, I obviously did not have the stats on your coin. Now I certainly see your point. It is quite likely that the little cac sticker will indeed bring a premium.
It is the fact that we have an individual who started a grading company and sold the grading co. and now wants to "grade" rather is grading the grading company he started. I laughed when I first read about the cac start-up, thinking there is now way this will takeoff, but now it is no laughing matter.
Conceivably he could sell his cac business and start grading the company that grades the gradinng company.
No question he has good business sense and is well connected and maybe I am a wee bit envious? I just can't help visualizing a couple of guys sitting around, saying lets start a company like cac and be smiling all the way to the bank!
just my thoughts no intent to belittle anyone or company.
