Heck yeah, for several years after the switch, our entire family searched Mom & Dad's pocket change for "real" quarters.

I saved a lot prior to 1964 and after when I could find them and then I would go into Vancouver BC and roll hunt 1968 or older and sell them in Wa. and pay for the trip to Canada with silver to my LCS and save the older Canadian coins I found when silver was high.

US reached the point where the metal in the coins was worth more than the face value in 1962. By 1964 every time you spent a dollar in silver coins you were giving way about $1.05 worth of silver. Then in 1965 the clad coins came out. Now when you spent a dollar in coins, if you spent silver ones you were giving $1.05+ in silver, if you spent clad the metal was worth maybe 5 cents. So if you are going to spend coins would you care which type of coins you were spending? You bet you did and whenever possible you held onto your silver coins and spent your clad ones. When everyone started doing that the silver coins vanished very quickly.

Several years ago we bought an older fixer upper house and I was digging some footings for a deck in my backyard and uncovered an old plastic orange juice container. It was filled with 1964 and older quarters - several pounds worth. We were able to fill up a couple of complete sets of albums, with the exception of 1 1932 coin.

My older sister worked as a bank teller in the 70's and she and her co-workers snagged a lot of silver in their teller drawers. They would set it aside and buy it at the end of their shifts. She kept the finds in coffee cans for years before selling much of it after combing through it for specific savers.

Back in the early seventies, I had just a handful of silver quarters set aside. My wife found one day that she didn't have any change for the laundry room machines, and appropriated my small stash for the purpose. Needless to say, I wasn't too pleased.

I actually started in the late '50's, as a way to have something to do during summer recess. If it wasn't for my Mother, I wouldn't have complete collections of the silver coinage. She's the one that pulled it from circulation; I couldn't afford to.

while the bulk of old silver coins have been pulled from circulation, there is still silver in circulation to find. even though most of it is now pulled, I think people often forget or fail to realize that many people do not know the difference and silver is still being put back into circulation through various means. it can still be found, just not in the quantities found in the mid-to-late 1960s and 1970s. it is still out there, you just have to be diligent and watching for it.  |

Was the price increase of silver in the 60's mainly due to the monetary situation (e.g. rampant money printing) or was there also stronger industrial demand (e.g. photography)?

I still have my share (136, IIRC) of the "real" quarters we pulled out of Mom's purse and Dad's pocket in the 1965-1967 timeframe. I'm not sure about my sister or M&D.
