All just a guess.... Mine is ... Coin was in a fire ... some substance in the fire melted onto the coin. Some of the damage looks like heat damage.

to the community Apparently this one has lots of stuff on it. Try soaking it in Acetone. Might get some of it off if it's some sort of glue.

Hello.. 82dAirborne, I have a Liberty V nickel similar to what you describe. I was curious what you ever found out about your coin? Did you ever have it looked at or appraised? I am uploading some pics of my coin. Any thoughts are appreciated Thanks!

I have never gotten any serious satisfactory answers to what the deal is with this coin. I disagree with the assessments offered on this post. You does look very similar and even the same date. I think it happened at the mint with some problem in the stamping when it comes to the folding or doubled bust on the front. I haven't been to a coin dealer yet but have it listed online with no buyers yet so value is subjective. Thanks for the pictures and the interested.

Quote: I disagree with the assessments offered on this post. Any reputable coin dealer will tell you the same. It's PMD (Post Mint Damage), most likely from exposure to very hot temperatures. Why do you think it's a mint error? Quote:Hello.. 82dAirborne, I have a Liberty V nickel similar to what you describe. I was curious what you ever found out about your coin? There may be a lamination defect on the obverse, but it does not command much of a premium due to the condition of the rest of the coin.

I can see where some of it is PMD but the back where it shows the outline of a bust and even on the front where it looks pressed into the metal leads me to believe that it was caused at a mint. I don't see how the pressures required to cause these features could have been applied anywhere else. I actually " Have the coin in my possession" and can "feel the surface of the coin" not to mention examining it under a strong digital microscope. It's easy to dismiss something when you don't actually have the object in your own personal possession to examine it in greater detail than just pictures can provide.

Show me where there is an outline of a bust on the reverse. All I see is PMD.

I wish I had a digital scale, that is on my list of things to buy. Next time I am in Springfield I will stop by a coin shop to get some more info. Sorry. When I get a scale I will post the weight.
