It's a "details" coin based on the field hairlines. Need better photos to grade beyond that.

This one also came in today. The coin was very dark and there was a strong tobacco smell coming from the coin. I soaked it in acetone, just to remove surface debris, but the color got lighter right away and a bright red toning was revealed. I checked the reverse between AMERICA and DOLLAR where I saw some scratches int he field near the edge. There are a few hairlines near the edge, but they look very shallow and less prominent than I would have expected. Those lines have a chance of giving the coin a details designation, but a much smaller one than I thought initially. I also thought there might be some scratches in the field to the right of the eagle's right wing. I examined the coin closely and I can't find anything there. There were two spots where the really old 2x2 that held this coin was missing a very small piece of the plastic cover in both places at star 1 and a little below star 13. In those spots, the coin's red toning is missing and looks silver colored. Netnet, the coin is beautiful so the hairlines bother me much less... or not at all.  Thoughts on grade and problems based on new pics? Thanks!    Non-magnetic, weight checks out as my scale rounds to the nearest gram. Standard weight for Trade dollars is 27.22g. Correct type 2 obverse and reverse. Looks legit to me. Interesting results from acetone soak. I am at XF 45 and on the fence about possible cleaning. I like the coin, but there is some pitting and spots that are distracting. It does look genuine, but would most likely get a details grade from the TPG's. |

It doesn't look cleaned, maybe a really old one but they may detail it as damaged. Xf45

It does look like it might be a RPD FS 301 in cherry pickers, so that should add some value to it.

Apparently Ray Lathrop discovered this variety in 1996 and published an article about it in 1997 in the Gobrecht Journal #70 (pgs.34-35). Interesting because Trade dollars were designed by William Barber, not Christian Gobrecht of Seated Liberty coinage fame. The Eric P. Newman Foundation arranged to have most issues of the Gobrecht Journal scanned and uploaded to the Stanford University Library and they can be downloaded for free. I downloaded them and below is Mr. Lathrop's article about his discovery of the 1877-S Trade dollar RPD FS-301 with pictures of his example and the diagnostics of the variety (which appear to match mine). I'm not sure that this is a situation where I need TPG authentication of the variety. Seems pretty clear to me. I wish I could take credit for catching this but even with the coin in hand, I didn't realize that this was an RPD until fellow CCF'er roach pointed it out.
