Thanks John1, do you know if there is any collector interest in off weight coins. Trying to figure out if I should keep it or throw it back. I may keep it anyway as an anomaly to show when I introduce people to the hobby.

If the color is not copper colored, then it was probably plated another color over the copper, making it slightly heavier.

Depends on the cause. If the coin is off weight because of the wrong stock material, yes. If it is because someone altered it, no. Usually if there is a premium for these, it is a one time error that was mint struck. An altered is not a premium coin.

Hi Coop, as far as I can tell the coin has not been altered in any way. I have seen a lot of 83s in the 2.4 to 2.7 range this one struck me as odd at 2.8 on my scale so I took it to work to weigh on a more accurate scale. Using calipers the coin is 0.750 inches in diameter, 0.064 inches thick and the rim is 0.061 inches. Except for the slight weight variation it is indistinguishable from any other 83.

OK, now I see where my color thought was incorrect. I imaged when you said it wasn't copper, I thought you meant it wasn't copper in color. Now images will show me if something is on the coin. But it is probably within tolerance. (This whole time I thought it was a different color)

So it much be an slight over weight cent. Looks like a nice coin. You might want to keep it as a better grade coin for your collection. But I don't see an error that will bring a premium for it.

Thanks Coop,
I will probably keep it as it is an oddity, and 83 had no mint sets.

I am interested in seeing the reverse side of the coin, if it isn't too much trouble.

I found an overweight 1983 cent a year or so ago that had a unusual texture to the surface, but only on one side. I have only ever seen that on one other coin, which was a 1983 cent that weighed 3.0g. My coin weighed 2.91g.
I don't think it is rare to find overweight cents from that year. The value would depend on how much over weight they are, and the reason for it. One of the cents I referred to was certified by NGC as being 98% Copper, a composition that has never been used in US coinage. The other coin came back from NGC with a label stating it was heavily Copper plated, around 51% Copper. Both coins had the identical texture showing on one side.
There is more information and some images of the coin I found on this website: http://Lincolncentsonline.com/Coppe...%20Zinc.html

Hi cwb, Here is the reverse, nothing different from a normal coin that I can see.
