I think most here were confusing strike weakness with wear. I looked at the right wing, and the highest points were still extremely sharp. That means the coin saw little to no circulation. I could not see any luster breaks.

I think the coin was dipped at some point in the past, but not abrasively cleaned.

I agree with MS on this one.

This coin is graded PCGS 63+ CAC an upgrade from its sale in the Newman collection where it was graded NGC 63 CAC and sold for $8812. It will be interesting to see what it sells for this time around via Great Collections.

Thanks for the info, Everest! How did you connect the dots on that one?

I remembered the coin from Heritages sale of the Newman collection and accessed their archives to get the sale price.

This coin sold for $22,500 ($20,000 + 12.5%) the other day. Two bidders went at it from $8800 all the way to $20,000. A very nice payday for the consignor. Nice to see Great Collections doing well. With Heritages and Stacks/Bowers 10% consignment fee and 20% buyers fee I see continued growth at GC. GC charges no consignment fee on coins over $1,000 and only 5% on coins under $1,000 and a buyers fee of 12.5%.

Anyone consigning to either of those that agrees to pay that is doing it wrong. Laura just did an article about this actually which I would recommend everyone reads

There's some really good basic points on the selling size a lot of people will fail to think about. Obviously not everyone will have the leverage to execute all those points, but anyone having a big sell off or selling a substantial amount certainly can get most of those.

Could not agree more basebal21. Thank you for pointing that out. There is always a great deal of wiggle room depending on a variety of factors. Laura is always a good read.
