The mirrors are great! I know PCGS takes that very seriously before giving a DMPL grade.

Nice coin. If you're happy with it that's all that matters.

The marks on the cheek might be luster breaks rather than true hits. I would have said MS-64DMPL based on the pics, but I couldn't disagree with PCGS without seeing it in hand.

Light reflecting back to the camera lens can be brutal. I would have said 64 as well but I'm guessing some of the hits are actually frost breaks also. A DMPL in this generation holder is a coin you can shave with. Very nice!

You gotta remember with dmpl coins is that the coin shows marks much easier than non pl/dmpl coins. The fields are not bad and the cheek isn't bad either. Dmpl coins are hard to get above 65 because of the marks. 66 dmpl are very rare. I think it was a tad overgraded too I think 64/64+dmpl

I think the hits look worse in the photos but maybe I am wrong. I am not an expert on these. I will post a few more pics in a few minutes.

Those scratches on the cheek are probably die polishing marks.

I understand why this coin is a star in your collection, and why you are very pleased to own it. I would be too!

The coin appears accurately graded, but may not be high end of the grade because of the cheek marks. On the DMPL coins the graders take a couple other things into consideration like the depth of the mirrors, the frosty devices, and the contrast. If you want a second opinion on how strong the coin is, send it to CAC.

Quote: The coin appears accurately graded, but may not be high end of the grade Looks like an MS-65 CC DMPL to me. Perhaps not a high end 65, but a 65 nonetheless. Beautiful black and white contrast, the mirrors look deep enough to shave with! DMPL's are difficult to grade as every mark is magnified from the mirrored fields and the thick frost on the portrait really emphasizes every little mark or scuff. If this was an 80-S, it would be an MS-64......but it's a Carson City and gets the bump in grading. Always have, always will. Those coins had a hard ride from the mint and it's truly a miracle that any survived in this condition. A very desirable and beautiful piece!
