Most of the zinc cents have very flat looking detail.

They actually changed the portrait somewhere along the line to account for the lighter strike, but I'm not sure when... pretty subtle.

i can usually tell by patina, although I get fooled every once in a while.

On the other hand, I can tell a silver from a cupro-nickel equivalent coin with my eyes closed--just by smell. Weird huh?

That's nothin! I can tell what a brand of Cookie-N-Cream icecream is by its smell

I can't figure out the ring thing either. I'm waiting for a machine to be devised that can sort them for you...cause I'm lazy

I was wondering if everyone else here on the forum have noticed this.
I have noticed that the Zincolns, especially just before the turn of the century, have a much lower relief. My guess is that it was done to protect the integrity of the copper coating.

BTW, it was not that long ago someone was boasting (maybe in jest) about how they could taste the difference.

I can tell whether a 1982 is zinc or copper by sucking on them. Seriously, try it next time. The copper 1982 is much sweeter than the zinc 1982 which is bitter to the taste.

Sometimes I take a whole fistful of pennies, stick them in my mouth, and seperate copper from zinc from spitting out all the zinc ones. Its a cool trick, maybe I could post a youtube video.

I'm going to guess that you're not a fan of the "upright citizen's brigade" TV show, eh?

It seems to me that from '96-'03 or so there were a lot of pennies minted with just miserably weak strikes... hardly any relief at all.

If I really spent my time sucking on pennies I'd probably have an alphabetical list of known diseases and ailments.

Appendicitis
Botulism
Cirrhosis
Dysentery
Elephantitis
Fatty Liver
Gonorrhea
HIV
Infertility
Jaundice
Kidney Failure
Laryngitus

Well, you see where I'm going here. I just wanted to get a laugh, I don't suck on pennies.

Sometimes you can tell the date of a Lincoln Cent just from the engraving details. They've had to re-engrave the master dies as they wear out over the years.

FYI--few diseases would live long on pennies, since copper is a pretty effective anti-microbal agent. For this reason, our currency uses ink with a high copper content. Then again, Anthrax spores might live on a penny for a long time....
