Looks like damage, but very unusual.

I couldn't find the article and there is no reference to road rash on error-ref.com. I might try looking more later on but it's lunch time....

The obverse face of this Bombay Hook quarter was abraded outside the Mint. It's not an error. The OP may have been referring to this article: https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-c...ype.all.htmlWhile this Indiana quarter looks like a case of road rash (post-strike damage), it's not. The planchet was scraped so heavily that the strike failed to smooth it out.

I wish the images were wider. Then I could see them better. I was trying to figure out how you could tell the difference?

E&V -- thanks for posting the link both before and after I posted that I couldn't find it. So embarrassed.... Planchet road rash is very different that the road rash endured by parking lot coins.

I had one that did this. Somehow it happened in the dryer. Mine was a little more severe than that one of yours.

Wasn't done responding so here is the rest....i honestly have no clue how it done it in the dryer but it only attacked the reverse side while obverse side hardly had pocket change damage.
