If someone does not mind my asking, what does a decent scope cost with the needed accessories? I'm fascinated! Mike

Yes, I was going to ask the same question. What type of scope is yours, and approximate price. Is this one of those German optical instruments like your hand lens ND? Also, I was just going to say, that even though you can see the tooling under magnification, the skill of some people is amazing. Probably a professional jeweler did this?

Since I already have a thread full of pics elsewhere, I'll just drop one into this thread to give you an idea of what my under-$100 QX5 is capable of.

That's at 60x, with 200x available, and I haven't even properly learned to illuminate the subject yet.

I have a QX3, looks like the QX5 has a little better resolution. I have lighting problems w/ the QX3 as well as focusing. It doesn't "fine focus" very well. Just a touch and you've went too far. But for the money, it ain't too bad. Have been considering a stereo mic with camera capabilities though.

I've got to buy one of those! Nat Dealer that is totally assume! I've ordered a stronger glass, but it only 20X, presently I'm using this 10X from the PX. No wonder I have headaches by the end of the day..

I personally use the MP-600T (7X + 45X Trinocular Halogen/ Halogen) with a current price tag of $759.

Can be found here:http://coinoptics.com/order/cat4.html

I do not recommend that everyone rush out and buy a microscope. However, with the numbers of altered and counterfeits rising, it should be a consideration.

I am a firm believer in the following:

65% coins
20% reference
15% supplies

So if you have $5000 or more in coins, a microscope is well within the budget.
The first time it saves you money, you will indeed agree that it is a tool that should be owned.

I have not used the QX series, so I cannot comment on those one way or the other.

OK all you microscope and stereoscope users.
I have used a QX 3 & I know it hooks up to the computer so I can get pictures that way..
How do you get your pictures off of a microscope/stereoscope?

I simply download the pics directly from my camera. The better models all have the ability to attach your camera

Well, I'll add a data point soon. I'm a horrible coin photographer and don't have a setup for it. I just ordered a QX5 for $79 with no tax or shipping. I'll play with it when I receive it and post some results, perhaps.

This mint mark was added to my 1879 Morgan. This coin was given to me but cost the previous owner $400-$500. Pic if from QX5 at 60X. I also have a stereo zoom microscope for close work.

Again it's all about lighting! And the angle of the light. I have a Microscope I bought in 1997 for $145.00 and a Sony digital camera. I focus, put the camera to the microscope ( the lens does not touch so it is perfectly safe) take the pic WITHOUT THE FLASH, connect the usb to my computer, resize and post my pic. The beauty of it is, before resizing it is a full (huge) pic so I do not have to squint while looking. Just by taking the pics if I think I see something, when I get it on the desktop I can find things I never knew was there. I have a desklamp with a bendable neck, this makes it easy to get the lighting just right!!!!
I have included some examples, a pic of my daughter with my Microscope& her collection, and an exaple of disappointment found with a microscope.

I have to admit, very interesting, but even with your first pic ND, you can see some tampering, I am sure that with my 10X eye loop, I would be able to see the tampering without a MS..do you agree?
