Me to. I was wondering why the design looked different on the 1983 compared with the 1982 quarters. That explains how the hop and the strike would make the die bounce to the rim area on this error. That makes sense now.

The 1983 Quarter design is so much different. The letters are very fat and big in shape. Is it a worn Master Die issue?

That maybe the case. I don't want to run ahead on this. But it looks like it.

Coop, If you want me to, I can get some more spacing on the edges if you think it would be worth doing so via high def pics from microscope at work?

It would be interesting if we can prove that this is a worn Master Die issue, but we don't know for sure. It would definitely make a very interesting thread discussion.

Group,
Thanks for all your positive comments on my coin. In your professional opinion, what would you grade this as? I'm new to this coining world and just don't understand the acronyms you use to describe coins. Especially, when it comes to accurate descriptions. I'm going to continue to learn though.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I know that this post is old but I am wondering if there was ever anymore information learned about this quarter. I have one that's very similar on the Obverse. Would like to know if you ever found out anything further

Basically they all look like that, that year. So there would be no premium for them. If the master hub was swollen, they would all be like that.

I will answer to this question about the Observe hubs of quarters. in the follows years new hub was introduce:1965, 1974, 1977, 1983, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1994. Also is 1976 for the bicentenary and after in 1999 a new one for the State program.
Caracteristic for 1982-1983 the diameter of the design was reduced in order to elongate the design from the rim.

The design was the same when they created the new master hub. So nothing was reduced. It was the "swollen master hub" that enlarged the design that made the differences on the 1982-1983 quarters.

It's possible that it's just wear I'm seeing but it appears that the first 3 letters overlap the rim and the rest sit below but right against it. Thanks for the information!

Sorry COOP but if I remember well also David Bowers and Fred Weinberg mention what I state. I give the years when the Hubs was redesign. If you superpose and 1982 design and the 1983 design you will be able to see the differences.
PS. A very know investor and collector from New Jersey permitted me to analyze three bags of quarters from 1982 and three from 1983.
I find that in 1982 we can find 2.75 coins of 100 with the new design of the 1983.

Well that didn't happen. They are all the same that year. If that were the case, there would be large and small dates that year. And that didn't happen. They are all the same that year. http://varietyvista.com/09b%20WQ%20...arieties.htmNote the variety listings for the obverse. There is a change on the 1983, but no 1982 coins were affected.
