I was about that age when my grandfather gave me a gold Sovereign from my birth year. I was hooked. I helped him catalogue his set and we discussed the various holes in his collection and how he should go about filling them.
The key I think was being treated like an adult; my opinion counted... A big thing for a 6 year old... In reality, my grandfather looked after the Sovereign until I was older but it did come to me. That said, he and I planned the evolution of his collection and I felt part of it. His experience also helped me focus what I collect.
As mentioned above, give him a budget to purchase coins. Help him plan... if he is going after an expensive coin, help him save from the budget to get there and I fully agree with access to some reference material.

First off to the site. As to your question, all the answers so far are all good advise to follow new people that show an interest need help to keep active in collecting. I think they have to be interested in collecting coins to begin with other wise all help is for nothing. I never received any positive comments from my parents or anyone else in my family when I first started collecting coins. They all told me they would never be worth anything but change, but I didn't care if they would have value I liked trying to collect every year. Except for the lady that gave me all the large cent coins from 1911-1920 when I was 8 years old, I was hooked and still am. Happy Hunting

At his age I would be tempted to take a look at world coins, by the pound on ebay, or digging through dealer's bins (5 for a $1 - can't go wrong) The variety (missing from Canadian decimals) would be a bit more fun, and hold his attention, compared to collecting 70 nickels that all look the same.

I would first get him a Charlton book and have him familiarize with prices and varieties in the subject he likes. Look for coin clubs in your area, http://www.reginacoinclub.comGo to local coin shows and auction viewings. Enjoy

with Wade. Getting a 5lb ebay lot of world coins and going through it, figuring out what country it's from and putting it in a 2 by 2 and labeling it. That would have definitely held my attention at 6! As going through world coins I have Numista open on my smartphone. Nice to quickly reference what you have. https://en.numista.com/

This may be contrary to what others have said... but in my opinion... I would say "give him nothing" let him EARN it! The reward will be greater and the appreciation will be deeper.
Example... have him do a good deed in the community or help with some type of chore around the house... this would earn him perhaps a roll of nickles for him to go through. (now if you happen to slip into the roll a few interesting nickels well that in my opinion is just providing extra motivation)
I wish you both a fun successful journey... and if there's any way we can help please don't hesitate to post there's some REALLY good people on here

Hi Would like to give a shout out to all involved in the Saskatoon show over the weekend. I could not believe how friendly and helpful everyone was to us. I felt kind of guilty almost every booth offered something for free to my kids (one even had a bucket out letting kids take 5 free coins) and I think a representative from Saskatoon gave all the kids a silver dollar,)and more surprising no one minded as my son (who is now 7)looked through binder after binder of coins and bills. I watched close of course to make sure he was being gentle, but some of it was fairly expensive and no one seemed to mind at all.
Generally in our family our deal is we will pay half of anything the kids want. I figure if they save half they are serious, we generally don't buy them hardly anything where we pay for it all. So he had saved about $20 and he is still so excited, he bought a 1743 Irish Coin, an old Canadian $5 and $2, and a 1937 Canadian $1. Some Big Canadian Pennies and a bunch of 50 cent pieces. He still doesn't really know what he wants to collect seems to like everything lol. So hopefully he specializes soon. One dealer after he bought an older 50 cent piece for a dollar and my son gave him a toonie so for his change the dealer gave him 2 50 cent pieces back. He was so happy. Anyways we had a great time.

When I was a kid, my Dad let me go through his pocket change. Whatever I took was deducted from my allowance for doing extra chores.

I got interested in coins when I was 7 because my dad got cheated by a beggar selling coins - it was the only kind of knowledge my dad seemed not to have !
For my almost 4 year old great nephew, on his birthday I'm going to give him an old copy of the Krause Mishler World Catalogue, 2 pages of album pockets to hold 40 coins, 40 2X2s and 25 world coins and tell him that if he can identify at least 20 coins correctly by the time of my next visit, I'll give him a valuable coin more than 1,000 years old.

Granddaughter is seven. Got her started a couple of years ago. Bought a couple of Lighthouse cheaper albums. We go to the bank when she comes over (lives in same city). Sorting through rolls seems to have appeal to her.

My ten year old boy has been helping me search coin rolls for the past five years. He loves it. Anything he adds to his collection comes out of his allowance. Last month he found a 1990 bare belly nickel and was pretty pumped.
