You guys have better eyes than me,I see no DDO. When ever possible, remove from whatever holder a coin is in before taking pics. You should be able to get a full coin pic with a USB scope. Put the scope on a book and keep adding books as needed. John1

On mine I can only get cents and Dimes. Nickels are too large.

John, it's definitely a Doubled Die Obverse as it has extra thickness on the date and on "IGWT".

I'm in agreement with John1. I guess some people will see it & some will not. I'm in the not seeing it camp.

Pennypride you nailed it, you got the big one! Congratulations on one great find. Yours is mid die state and a few dings but it is the 1984 D F'S-101. Don't hold your breath looking for another woohoo great job. Look at the bottom of Abe's bust...the entire length will show a thin line all the way across. Match the reverse die markers also and you will know definitely. Its the good one way to go. I will give you 50 for it :)

Should I get it graded? I'll get it graded by NGC, as it cost $65 to get it graded by PCGS.

I wouldn't the coin is not worth that much. I've never sent anything in to be graded. I figure the value had to be over $100+ if I ever did. They even charge more for attributing a doubled die. PCGS will usually only use FS-###s.

I agree that it's not worth getting it grading. It will cost more than what the coin is worth.

Pennypride if your really into varieties enjoy it in the raw for awhile once its slabbed it kinda takes the edge off them. ANACS will slabbed it for $10 + $7 + shipping and insurance total around $23.00 I have about 15 variety cents in ANACS holders and in my opinion they get a bum rap as all are neck and neck with the other big 2 "NGC, PCGS". For collecting ANACS is great; for selling PCGS or NGC is the way to go. Your coin if it grades AU-55 in a PCGS holder could possibly bring $80.00 -$100.00 at auction minus listing and sellers fees. Deduct what PCGS charged to slabb it and you end up with $45.00. For a coin like yours I say no way Jose, as you developed your skills and friends in this hobby you will start trading with other collectors as you need, want etc. and a coin like yours is great for a trade up or towards a coin you want. Celebrate your find, I searched 2 years for mine in a crappy AUish grade and wouldn't sell it for $250.00. Any decent die variety is just plain hard to find roll searching. You got me fired up, the 84 D is pretty dang scarce, keep that baby.

I just wanted to get it verified that it is in fact rare/ "worth a lot of money". I am only a senior in high school, and I have Aspergers, so I tend to get overly excited, and exaggerate how I found a rare coin. I also do not intend to sell it, as I am interested in collecting mint error cents. A while back, I found what I thought was a 1969 d penny, with the FG missing. It was priced at around $10, but I found out that it is only worth what people are willing to pay. And as it was very controversial on whether it was a true mint error, meant that no one thought it was worth anything. But thanks for all of the great feedback, it was very helpful!

Pennypride it just keeps getting better and better the more you learn. I ride the coattails of this forum and suck in the knowledge. At your age if you start now you could assemble an incredible collection by your early 30's. Check out the 1982 strikes (7 types) that can still be found for face value, the 1960 small and large dates, and the 1974 series. The mega- RedBook will get you up and running paired with "the authoritative feference on Lincoln cents" and you can live dangerously building a collection on a limited budget. Good luck and keep searching.

Excellent eye ! Getting overly excited about a find is the juice that heads you to the next score. Just remember not to set yourself up for a letdown by only seeing only $ signs. Big dollar coins are out there but they are big dollar because they are rarely found. A goal other than big money will keep you in the game and if you don't play there is no chance you will score big !
