It looks like a cast counterfeit to me. I would check the weight.

I put a collage here to compare. Where do you see any flags for a cast copy Dave? Other than a weak to no banner showing above the beak, right off, I didn't see too much discrepancy. But now, the more I look at it, the lettering in HALF and BIBB and KILBY look funny and inconsistent and the roundness of the conjoined busts is irregular on the coin in question. I tend to agree with you Dave, it at least looks suspicious now that you mention it.

The surfaces are grainy and the wear pattern/ progression does not make sense. Look at the eagle's legs and the arrow fletchings or lack there of.. This would be expected of a G/VG graded coin?

The 2X2 is wrong size ( 2's are too large ) Stars are inconsistent in shape. A magnet would possibly stick to it and I agree, weighing this should point out that it should be very close to 12.5 grams. Hope you can send it back. Good Eye Dave!

Thank you all for the comments. Very helpful and insightful! Although not what I hoped to hear. I will weigh it soon & post the results for confirmation. Bought it at an estate sale, relatively inexpensive. I doubt a return/refund will be possible...likely I bought some experience

I don't think it's right either, but right or wrong, I just don't find it very attractive.

Black toning, possibly applied, is unlikely to help the color. But at this point it doesn't matter.

The coin is not genuine. 2x2 is raised on your example and is pressed in on a real coin.

Everyone's analysis has me nervous about another commemorative half dollar I bought at the same estate sale. A 1921 Pilgrim. Thoughts on the authenticity of this coin? (should this question be a separate topic?) I already sold the 1921 Pilgrim and feel obligated to offer buyer a refund if it's a fake too.

This would be a 1921 which is more rare than the undated Pilgrim. All of the E's on the reverse look wrong to me and the crows nest is a blob on yours. The dot looks small on the left side of the obverse between PILGRIM and TERCENTENARY. Not looking good but I applaud you for your honesty.

Quote: should this question be a separate topic? Likely yes - but we can discuss both of them here. Appears by my eye that you were sold two non-authentic coins in that estate sale - both examples you have shown are replicas of genuine coins.

I just saw corrosion, didn't even think authenticity - excellent group of members here as you probably know already!

Quote: The coin is not genuine. 2x2 is raised on your example and is pressed in on a real coin. This was the first thing that jumped out at me. That 2x2 shoulda been filled with gunk with that much wear, so it had to be raised.
